A. Provide a web link to the content standards used in your state.
Louisiana Student Standards (louisianabelieves.com)
B. Interview (suggested length 30 minutes) one current K-12 teacher. Be sure that
your interview questions allow you to answer the prompts below.
1. Submit a completed and signed “Interview Verification Form.” Note: The attached “Suggested Interview Questions” may be used to help structure your interview.
Note: Ideally, the teacher being interviewed should teach the same content area and level as you would wish to teach.
C. Reflect on your interview by doing the following:
1. Description: Summarize the teacher’s views on the given topics:
• application of content standards used in your state Mrs. Cook uses the Louisiana State standards for science / performance expectations, and achievement level descriptors. The standards are based on science and engineering practices. They inform the student objectives and overall, what students are expected to know and do by the end of the unit. The standards don’t consider that some kids cannot read or comprehend. Some kids are expected to meet standards that they cannot. But these standards hold the school accountable and give guidance. The standards drive everything including the objectives. The objectives are then posted at the beginning of the lessons, in PowerPoints, and on the walls. The objectives always align with the standards, and the students can always see and reference both the standards and objectives.
• internal and external influences that impact education at your school or district
The end of the year assessments, LEAP, CFA, etc drive everything. Everything that is done seems to be in preparation for these tests. As for challenging students, there is no time to add rigor in a forty-five-minute class that is scripted. She cannot challenge students because of how vigorous the schedule is. She is usually struggling to catch up. Data is used to measure student comprehension. All students can learn. Therefore, if the data on assessments show that most students are struggling on certain questions, Mrs. Cook can clearly see that the issue is her explanation of the content. This then allows her to revisit and change her teaching strategy to find more effective ways to help students learn. The students also used thumbs up and down as a self-assessment to show their
understanding of the content or lack thereof. Tutoring is offered, but there is a lack of push here in the special education department. This school offers programs like talented music, talented art, and special education. • teacher identity and view of self (i.e., Hattie’s mindframes)
As a new teacher, Mrs. Cook felt very unsure and needed lots of help. It took a while for her to get into the rhythm of feeling like a teacher. However, when students started coming back and sharing how she impacted them, she realized her purpose and really owned her title as teacher. She believes one must have interpersonal skills, be nurturing, and be resilient. Moreover, she suggests that every moment must be a new moment, as there's no place for grudges in the classroom. Mrs. Cook and her husband are both champions of the teachers’ union. They fight for teachers so that teachers can fight for kids. Also, according to Mrs. Cook, one must have computer literacy, as much of the curriculum is executed online. Organization is key. Mrs. Cook is very nontraditional and innovative. She utilizes much technology and connects to the current culture to establish rapport with students. • ways teachers can continue to grow in their teaching practice or professional development
St. John holds PLCs often. She has also pursued a master’s degree in instruction.
The most often tool that she uses for continued growth is peer development and team strategizing. She does professional workshops with colleagues to share best practices. •
Mrs. Cook attended the LASARD workshop to grow in understanding of ABA. She also uses teacher-to-teacher Facebook groups. Networking with other teachers is how she feels that she grows. She believes that searching in one’s own district first is key to finding professional development to stay within the district standards of our school. Her school also offers shared planning periods where teachers can collaborate. 2. Feelings: Describe your feelings about the interview, including:
• how you felt before the interview
I was apprehensive before the interview. I was excited and nervous. I was looking forward to learning from a 15 year veteran teacher, but I was hoping that she did not talk me into fear. • how you felt during the interview
During the interview, I realized that many of her answers were what I expected. I was challenged to shift my perspective in some areas though. Time was the main shift. I realize now that time may hinder my unrealistic expectations of how effective I can be as a teacher. And I really have a strong sense that Mrs. Cook was saying to just do the best that I can.
• how you think the teacher felt about the interview
She was happy to help, and she feels like she gave me as much information to prepare me. I think she believes in me and feels that I will be a great teacher. 3. Evaluation
:
a. Describe how the interview did or did not align to what you had expected.
The interview aligned with my expectations of the curriculum and standard practices. I knew that we follow Louisiana standards and that they had to be visible in the classroom. I did not realize that so many factors had not been considered in planning lessons which is the cause of many teachers being frustrated and falling behind. b. Describe something that went well during the interview.
Mrs. Cook’s explanations and elaboration of subjects went well. Her answers were clear
and concise. c. Describe something that you would do differently, based on your experience in the interview.
If I could do the interview over, I would have recorded her responses so that I could refer back to all of the wisdom that she imparted to me. 4. Analysis
: Explain why you agree or disagree with the teacher’s views on the given topics:
• application of content standards used in your state
I agree that the standards that we use are the Louisiana standards, and I agree that they drive the curriculum. • internal and external influences that impact education at your school or district
I agree that standardized tests drive the curriculum and that most of the content is geared towards preparing kids for assessments, but I do not know if this necessarily means that there is no room for vigor or challenging students.

• teacher identity and view of self (i.e., Hattie’s mindframes)
I differ from Mrs. Cook because, unlike her, I already feel like a teacher and currently know the impact that I can and will have on students. I agree that teachers must be resilient and able to deal with many personalities. • ways teachers can continue to grow in their teaching practice or professional development
I strongly agree that teacher collaboration and PLCs help the development of teachers. I
also think I would like to get a master’s degree like Mrs. Cook did. 5. Conclusion
:
a. Summarize what you learned from the interview.
I learned that teaching is just as challenging as it is rewarding. I learned that there are many factors outside of the teacher’s control such as family issues, state standards, and
district expectations. Additionally, I learned that my attitude is what I have the most control over, and as the teacher, my effectiveness will be strongly impacted by my mindset.
i. Explain how what you learned from the interview has influenced your understanding of the role of a teacher.
Because of the interview, I understand that the role of a teacher is to be content strong and understand the standards associated with my state and district so that my students are fully prepared to succeed. After listening to Mrs. Cook, I understand that there are objectives outlined within a strict timeline that must be accomplished. This interview helped me understand how organized the lesson plans must be. Lesson plans in St. John Parish have planning down to the minute. It is easy to fall behind without proper planning and organization. Preparation is key. b. If you were to conduct the interview again, describe what you would do differently to improve the interview experience.
One thing that I would do differently is that I would record the interview. I would also have asked an English teacher because after this interview, I know that I would prefer to
teach English. 6. Action
a. Explain how one
of Hattie’s mindframes supports teacher success.
Understanding that a teacher is a change agent supports success because it promotes a ardent passion to do whatever it takes to help kids learn and grow. b. Describe a personal strength and weakness related to the Hattie’s mindframe explained in part C6a.
I personally believe that all kids can grow, and I understand my impact as a change agent. This is a strength, and I have found many ways over the years to help even the most severe deficits turn around. I have consistently seen growth in my students.
While I love giving and helping students understand feedback, often it is hard to accept it as it relates to being a better educator because of their context. Many days, they just feel like school is boring, the food is nasty, and they want to go home. While I can try to make activities more fun, many of their feedback is beyond my control. c. Create a SMART goal you can work on that will support your development into a teacher.
I want to better my understanding of the success criteria and state standards in ELA K-
8th grade by signing up for the free professional learning and development courses offered this summer in St. John Parish. i. Identify a professional development opportunity (i.e. workshop, training, or experience) available to you online or in your community that aligns with your SMART goal.
There is the BESE Tuition Program for Teachers. This is a competitive program that gives grants to teachers to go to accredited colleges or universities in Louisiana to continue education. There is also the STEM program to help teachers grow in science, technology, engineering, and math. And also, when BESE funds are exhausted one can
use the CTEP https://regents.la.gov/ctep/ to also grow as a teacher. D. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
E. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
