INSTRUCTIONS This is a practice that will help you analyze the structure and content of a passage. Before completing it, make sure you review ALL content under Module 6 – Using Source Text. This assignment has two (2) sections: 1. Section 1: SQ3R Reading Worksheet The first section is the SQ3R Reading Worksheet . You will use this strategy to help you analyze the structure and organization of a text and then think about the text you are reading while you are reading. SQ3R is a reading comprehension method named for its five steps: S urvey, Q uestion, R ead, R ecite, and R eview. The method offers an efficient and active approach to reading textbook material. Read “ What Is SQ3R? A Definition For Teachers ”. The following video is also an overview of the steps of the SQ3R System . 2. Section 2: Textbook Exercises For the Textbook Exercises section, you will need to first read the assigned article in your textbook. After that, complete the activities that follow that passage. SQ3R Reading Worksheet Instructions : 1. Before you begin reading, use the clues of the text features listed in the first column to predict what you will learn. Article: Unit3/Reading3 – The Language of Twenty-First-Century Business (p. 181-184) SURVEY: Record important text features from the reading selection. QUESTION: Turn each text feature into a question. Write " Who , What , Where , When , and Why " questions for the main topics in the selection. Title/Heading: The language of Twenty-First-Century Business. How did English become the language used in business nowadays? Subheadings: The Rise of Global English “Globish: Attempting to Break through Barriers. What is goblish? Bold: Africa, Relinquish, Corporations, English, Franca. How did English become the language used in business nowadays? Due to the expansion of the British Empire along with the exponential grow and influence of its colonies. What is goblish? A combination of “global” and “English”. A formal subset of English consisting of about 1500 words and basic grammar rules. Why is corporation in bold on the reading? The author emphasizes that the losses on sales, productivity, and efficiency pertain to corporations. What is lingua franca? A term used to describe any language of wider communication used by people who do not share a language. How is the picture related to the topic? The picture shows the percentages of English speakers by country. 3. RECITE: Create a summary for the selection. Make sure you put what you have learned into your own words. In summary I learned… Lingua franca is a common language used for business, culture, and diplomacy by non-native speakers. In the twenty-first century, English became the predominant language leading many countries to invest in teaching it as a second language. Even though almost one billion people have English as a second or foreign language, companies may still experience productivity and efficiency losses due to the different variations of English found in various regions of the world. As a result, Globish was established as a global and basic grammar English. 4. REVIEW: Pretend you are responsible for teaching this section to someone else. Can you do it? Go back to review your questions, and see if you can answer them all easily. If not, go back and review the survey and the reading steps. Yes.
