Assignment HW-6/2019W

Assignment HW-6. Due 16:30, Mon., April 1, 2019
Question 1
[20 marks]
Select an economical section for the beam in the figure. The beam supports a floor in
an industrial building.
You may use the beam selection tables to get a trial section, but you must do and show
all relevant strength checks manually, from first principles (i.e., the relevant clauses of S16).
You may calculate the deflection at the centre of the span using case 8 on page 5-132 of
the handbook. Note that the maximum deflection is unlikely to be at the centre, but will
likely be close and little different in magnitude, so this is a reasonable estimate.
In principle, you must check all three segments, but one can be eliminated by inspection.
State which one, and the reasons.

Project 2:
Fixed/buit-in or encastré beams (see Figure.2) are usually used in structure due to their high stability and
performance in resisting shear stress and bending moment. Your role in building and construction company is to
analyse the shear forse and bending moment in order te provide bstter design of such beams under varisty of
loads. Your manager asked you to provide a complete analysis as well as to deliver a report including your design
