EDUC 410 I NTERDISCIPLINARY I NSTRUCTIONAL P LANNING P ROJECT O VERVIEW - E LEMENTARY AND S PECIAL E DUCATION In this course, you will learn to plan instruction through an interdisciplinary and culturally responsive lens by connecting your lesson planning to researched best practices. This project is a key assessment that will be submitted to both Canvas and LiveText upon completion. Your project is a 20-day interdisciplinary instructional unit plan that is content-focused and connects various disciplines or subject areas across the curriculum. Your unit plan will consist of twenty separate lesson plans that instruct the unit from beginning to end. The the first ten days’ lesson plans will be in full lesson plan format and the final ten days will be in horizontal planning chart format (i.e., block-style plans). This project is divided into smaller pieces, or assignments, to be submitted across the term. The assignments for this project are: Module 2: Week 2 Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Mission Statement, Character Principles, and Biblical Worldview Assignment Module 3: Week 3 Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Proposal Assignment Module 4: Week 4 Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Lesson Plans 1 – 4 Assignment Module 6: Week 6 Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Lesson Plans 5 – 8 Assignment Module 7: Week 7 Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Final Assignment* *Note: For the Interdisciplinary Instructional Planning Project: Final Assignment, you will submit all twenty lesson plans this project requires, including the eight lesson plans you submitted in the previous two assignments. This means for this assignment, you will need to create the remaining two lesson plans in full lesson plan format and the ten horizontal, block- style plans to account for the twenty lessons needed. The final assignment will be submitted to both Canvas and LiveText . Specific Project Requirements Additionally, there are specific requirements for which your project will be evaluated. The required elements and their frequency are explained in the following table: Page 1 of 4
EDUC 410 Requirement Frequency Explanation Mission Statement, Character Principles, and Biblical Worldview Once You will compose a mission statement for your conceptualized school and define character principles, providing a biblical worldview to each. Content Standards All lesson plans Each lesson plan you create for this project will require the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) to be identified. For English/Language Arts and Math content areas, Common Core State Standards will need to also be identified in addition to the Virginia Standards of Learning . Your plans must be interdisciplinary, meaning more than one content area’s standards should be represented. See Interdisciplinary Standards below for more information. Interdisciplinary Standards and Integration All lesson plans Your plans must include activities to allow students to make interdisciplinary connections among concepts, procedures, and applications. Your planned activities must provide extensive interdisciplinary opportunities for students to evaluate multiple perspectives and understand complex issues. Ensure more than one content area’s standards are represented in each lesson plan. At a minimum, direct instruction and standards should be included for these content areas as follows: Science or Social Studies = 10 lessons Reading & Research = 3 lessons Writing & Communication = 3 lessons Math = 2 lessons PE/Health = 1 lesson Arts = 1 lesson Variety of Teaching Strategies All lesson plans Your planned instructional strategies must be developmentally-appropriate and encourage students’ development of critical thinking, problem- solving, and performance skills. Your planned learning experiences should be hands-on and allow for active engagement. Students should be able to Page 2 of 4
EDUC 410 connect instruction to real-world experiences. Assessment All lesson plans Include with each lesson plan an explanation of how each lesson’s assessment data will be used to inform instruction. Pre-Assessment : a diagnostic pre-assessment to be given prior to beginning the unit’s instruction must be included with the first lesson . Formative Assessment : Every lesson must contain both formal and informal assessments . Summative Assessment : Plan a final summative assessment similar to the Pre-Assessment so you can make a comparative analysis at the end of the unit. The Summative Assessment must occur after Lesson #10 (i.e., during one of the block-style lessons) . Culturally Responsive Teaching All full-style lessons (i.e., Lessons 1 – 10) Your lesson plans should exhibit extensive efforts for diversity and equity in culturally responsive instruction. Each lesson must contain a strategy for connecting with various cultures that could be represented in the classroom. Remember that culture can include but is not limited to ethnicity, race, or nationality. Technology Integration At least 5 full-style lesson plans in addition to one full-style lesson being an entirely virtual lesson The use of instructional technology must be evident in at least five lesson plans , and at least one lesson must be entirely virtual . The technology experiences you design must improve students’ technical skills and allow them to practice content, skills, and online research. Differentiated Learning All full-style lessons (i.e., Lessons 1 – 10) Each lesson should exhibit evidence of the following: Supporting students with special needs Challenging above-average students Facilitating a classroom environment that supports student learning Extension or enrichment opportunities for students who have already mastered the Page 3 of 4

EDUC 410 content Community Engagement Submitted with the final submission of the project In addition to your 20 lesson plans, you must include a plan for community engagement wherein families are invited into the classroom for a culminating activity/student presentation toward the end of the instructional unit. For this project element, you will create a flyer to send home to parents/families sharing the content of your interdisciplinary unit plan and inviting them to the classroom for the culminating activity you design. Your culminating activity must be creative, engaging, and culturally responsive. The flyer you create to send home to families inviting them to the activity/event must include the following: Standards – Interdisciplinary Topics of instruction Sample assignments An overview of the activity/event you have planned Connections to Research, Theory, and Best Practice All full-style lessons (i.e., Lessons 1 – 10) Each full-style lesson plan must contain current APA-formatted references to 5 – 6 professional resources related to areas such as instructional strategies, subject content, assessment, technology, differentiation, meeting the needs of various learners, etc. Note: Your assignments will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
