Members 1, 2, 3, and 4 are in tension. Determine the tensile capacity for each of these members. The steel is ASTM A572 Grade 50 and 3 4 inch bolts are used in drilled holes. If not shown, use standard gauges (Page 6-175 of steel Handbook) for the members.
2 Question No. 2 (15 Marks) Design a member for the top chord AB in the truss shown in Fig. 3 using a double C section back- to-back. Use G40.21-350W steel. The ends of member AB are welded to 18 mm gusset plates. Horizontal bracing is provided at the joints. Assume that the weld length L along both sides of the channels at ends A and B is L=1.25d, where d is the depth of the C section. The service loads are shown in the figure below.
3 Question No. 3 (20 Marks) Figure below shows a building frame in which G40.21-300W steel is used. The structure is braced against sidesway in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions. In the out-of-plane directions, all the connections including the supports are pinned. Determine: (a) The governing slenderness ratio (KL/r) for columns C2, C3, C4, C8. (b)The factored compressive resistance (Cr) of columns C3 and C7. Question No. 4 (5 Marks) (To assess Life-long learning skills) Conduct research on the Internet on the 1906 “Quebec Bridges Collapse”, and write a maximum 250 words text explaining the reasons for the collapse, the lessons learned, and ways to prevent similar structural failures in the future. Please include picture or any other illustration that might help you in depicting your explanation. Please provide any references that you use this research question.
