Summarize the objective and importance of these datasets Data Set 1 ( https://www.bts.gov/content/us-general-aviationa-safety-data ) Aviation safety data This data set on the safety of passengers over the past two decades identifies the total number of accidents, fatalities, and seriously injured people. Based on the total number of accidents, we can infer that fatalities are higher than the total number of seriously injured people. This is a problem for airlines because, for each accident, they are held accountable. Engineers need to use this information to create solutions to problems that could cause harm to the passengers and workers of aviation and air transportation. One instance where the total number of flights decreased with the total number of accidents is during COVID-19 and stayed at the lowest it has been. Problems with these datasets include not specifying when showing total accidents, fatalities, and serious injuries if they are workers or passengers on flights. Data Set 2 ( FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status ) This data set offers real-time visualization of the active flights occurring worldwide. As well as offering trends in aviation. The data set also offers more detailed information by clicking a flight on the active flight map or by searching for a flight in the search bar. This detailed data can describe the type of carrier, its purpose, destination, and travel time. The data set can also be filtered by Cargo, Passenger, Airports, Travel, Owners, etc to provide a more specific data set for a specific engineer question. Flight Aware also offers data and photos on specific aircraft. The photos are specific to that aircraft and a code is given to identify that aircraft to let passengers assess the condition of that specific aircraft and how often it is in use. By looking at the data set, trends, and visual mop an engineer can get an idea of the air traffic flow types of aircraft in use, and frequency of use.
Data Set 3 ( https://nhts.ornl.gov/ ) The National Household Travel Survey is a way for the Federal Highway Administration to source the travel behavior of the American public. This is an amazing way to analyze trends in travel for personal and household use. It can survey the total vehicle trips, total vehicle miles, total person trips, the number of people older than the age of 5 in a car, the driver’s gender, if they are driving for work i.e. trucking, and the type of vehicle used. We can infer from this information that the total number of vehicle trips should increase in the following years. The total vehicle trips are nearly 147 billion and that is dependent on the amount of people who drive. Engineers can use this information to adjust the size of lanes on highways, allow access to safer and abundant roads, and know just how many people need to travel using the services they provide. Problems with this dataset include not specifying what drivers and workers by sex mean, not identifying who is being surveyed, and only counting the drivers and not the passengers. Create a scenario that applies the dataset discussed to solve an engineering planning or design problem Data Set 1 ( https://www.bts.gov/content/us-general-aviationa-safety-data ) Imagine a scenario where engineers are working on the pavement for the runway of an airport. Following this scenario an engineer steps into an area with wet pavement without any warning or indicators of wet pavement and twists his ankle. This dataset would include this incident as an accident. Using this information, we can take specific situations and make sure to prevent problems like indicators of wet pavement to ensure the safety of the workers and the passengers. This all comes down to efficiency, safety, and accountability in engineering planning and design.

Data Set 2 ( FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status ) Imagine a scenario where an engineer is trying to reduce near-air collisions. This data set would provide an active map of all air traffic to visualize where aircraft would be intersecting the same path of travel and at what times they would be on the same path of travel. Using the detailed View, an engineer can identify the purpose of their aircraft, whether it is passenger or cargo, and then establish a priority scale to determine the precedence of which craft needs to be in that travel path. An engineer would also be to determine the amount of fuel the craft has to determine how long that aircraft can be in the air and assess which craft can take a long path that has less congestion. Data Set 3 ( https://nhts.ornl.gov/ ) Imagine a scenario where an engineer is deciding where the most efficient highway should be built next. This data set allows the engineer to factor how big the highway should theoretically be, how often it is going to be used, and how long the highway should run for. Overtime, adjustments can be made to their formula of a successful highway by checking the National Household Travel Survey yearly. Although the trend only shows an increase in the amount of traveling taken place by the American public , it introduces a cause and effect which will benefit both the engineer and the services they provide to the public. Present 2 critical questions that the datasets you chose could answer and explain the calculations you would do to achieve this answer. 2 questions per dataset. Data Set 1 ( https://www.bts.gov/content/us-general-aviationa-safety-data ) Question 1: Are there any trends in the data sets? The data shows that the total number of accidents go down every year. Over a period of 21 years, the total number of accidents decreased an average of about 1500 persons a year. I
found the average slope by adding each year of accidents and dividing it by a total of 21 years. The same could be done for total fatalities and total seriously injured persons, but the data is too insignificant to create a trendline. Question 2: Are there any specific dates that contribute to the data set? I recognized that the years 2006 and 2020 contribute the most significant data in that the year 2006 had the highest total fatalities across the 21 years this data set provides and 2020 had the lowest amount of total fatalities, total seriously injured persons, and total accidents. Using my best knowledge of history, in 2006, there was an aircraft carrying explosives in the form of beverages and increased the total number of fatalities contributing to data that ties in with history. As for 2020, that was the year airports were less frequently used for travel due to COVID-19. Data Set 2 ( FlightAware - Flight Tracker / Flight Status )) Question 1: What are the delays at a specific airport? Using the flight delay tool, a user can look up an airport or a specific flight to better time their arrival. Question 2: How many of the flights in the air are cargo vs passenger plans? Flight Aware collects data from a multiple source and filters it through a learning machine called Hyper feed that then processes the data and makes inferences from it. A graph is provided for weekly data the machine has produced. From the chart, 70% of flights were commercial last week.
Data Set 3 ( https://nhts.ornl.gov/ ) Question 1: How does the statistic on gender roles affect engineers and why is it important to survey by the National Household Travel Survey? Interestingly, I found that there were more female persons that travel than men, there were about equal drivers for both genders, and more male workers than female. Although an interesting survey, we can conclude that in terms of the total number of people trips, being 231,716 million people, gender does not affect how engineers apply this information to their jobs. Question 2: Why is it important to note the persons by age 5+? When taking into account who is allowed to take the survey, those that are not currently driving is a part of the statistic; however, this allows for those who do not have a driver's license to be considered as a person who still uses the highway. As long as they are age 5 and above, they are allowed to contribute to this survey. Accidents. More context should be provided to the degree of injury as well. Separation should be provided too if the fatalities and injuries were from employees or passengers. Data Set 2 Question: What are the strengths and weaknesses of this dataset? The complete data set is not available to the public and is generated by AI. Instead, the website references all the datasets used by their AI. If an engineer wanted to make inferences outside of what the AI already does they would have to download the data sets themselves and sift through the massive datasets. Data Set 3 Question: What are the logical arguments against these datasets What use is the NHTS to engineers when they are sorting the survey data by age or gender? I think a unique approach to slightly change the NHTS is by making it related to behavior of the American public for example: DUI’s or speeding are something that most Americans cannot avoid which would do better for engineers in preparing safety precautions against Americans that possibly do these things.
