Report
CHM 2120 Using systems thinking, argumentation and organic chemistry to evaluate aspartame Today’s activity will only be marked for participation. The exam can include questions similar to this activity that will be marked for correctness. In this activity, you are asked to create a system map. Definition : A system map includes components of a specific topic, connections between these components, interconnections (multiple connections between components) and cyclic connections where applicable. Below is one example of a system map on ammonia showing some of the relevant connections of the Haber-Bosch reaction that connects this reaction with broader earth and societal systems. The “reaction conditions subsystem” shows several interconnections with the component’s “ammonia” and “equilibrium”. Additionally, boundaries are drawn around subsystems based on the intended purpose of the topic.
CHM 2120 1. Individually, create a system map on aspartame. You can use pen and paper, a computer or tablet application (PPT, Notability, etc), or a free online platform ( https://miro.com/login/ ) (~7min) In addition to the definition described above, system maps should include: connections to Organic Chemistry II connections the information you wrote in Quiz 10 (questions 1 and 7) 2. Choose one of the following options (~10 min) . a. Create a group of 2 to 3 people to share system maps and combine your systems to form a new system. You can make new concepts and connections in these group systems b. Continue working individually on your system map. 3. Based on everything you have done above, is aspartame good or bad for human health? Construct an argument using multi-component causal reasoning. (~5 min) Aspartame is not bad for human health. However, consuming large quantities of aspartame can become harmful to our health as aspartame breaks down into methanol. High concentrations of methanol in the body can be toxic. 4. Optional. Describe what you liked and/or did not like about this activity? (~5 min) This activity was very interactive and required critical thinking. It will prepare us well for the final exam.
