Make four observations about the materials before they are combined. Observations should be based on what you see, smell, feel, etc. 1. The food coloring we use is blue 2. The vinegar has a strong smell 3. The milk is cloudy and cold 4. The Vinegar in the cup is clear but not clearer than water 2. Form a hypothesis regarding what will occur when the materials are combined. Remember that a hypothesis is a testable statement. When the materials are combined together will make everything turn blue as well as cause a chemical reaction due to the vinegar being added to the hot milk Heat the milk and food coloring in a 400 mL beaker on a hot plate until hot but not boiling. Add the vinegar and stir. Pour the mixture through the coffee fi lter in a strainer into a bucket. Rinse with cold water at the sink and collect the materials on the strainer. Once cool enough, shape the materials and form into a mold. Allow the new material to cool and harden before you continue. Lab 1: Activity 3 Questions

What occurs when the materials are combined? Was your hypothesis correct? My hypothesis was correct, when all of the materials were added, a chemial reaction occured causing the vinegar to not mix with the milk and become clumpy 4. Describe the new material you created. Were the results surprising? I created a clumpy seperated type of material that wont mix together no matter how much you stir it. The results were suprising i did not expect the vinegar to not mix with the mix 5. Now do some of your own experiments using the resulting substance. Come up with two questions, hypotheses, and results. a. Question 1: Hypothesis 1: Result: b. Question 2: Hypothesis 2: Result: a.Question: I wonder what will happen if you let the materials cool down? Hypothesis: The items when cooled down will eventually mix together Results: When the materials cool

Question: What does this new created material feel like? Hypothesis: I think that the material will feel wet and sticky Result: The material feels wet and sticky. It is also not that strong it is easy to break apart. 6. What is your product? From the expeirment we conducted the product that was made was a type of plastic that can be used. 7. Was this a good method for creating your product? How is this product prepared commercially? This is a easy way to make this product but not necessarily the best way to make it. 8. Scientists have been able to identify and explain many aspects of our world by using the scienti fi c method. Name three important scientists and their contribution to environmental science. 1. John H Seinfeld known for his reasearch into air pollution primary the properties of aresol. Published many articles on why aresol is not healthy for the enviorment. 2.Aldo Leopold known for his reasearch on better ways to protect wild life and the nature. He discoverd many wildlife managment techniques that we use today. 3. James Hansen
