Report
Berenice Rojas Professor Gutierrez CHS 212-01 22 October 2021 Reading Reflection #5 In the book,  Black Power  by Carmichael and Hamilton, Chapter One, called White Power, talked about racism as " subordination of "control over that racial group" (pg. 20). It explains how there are two types of racism in this country: individual racism, which is violent, which can be seen and condemned by those against racism. Institutional racism, which, although less damaging, kills much more because it occurs within the government and the community, such as the lack of proper food, and medical facilities. Nowadays, white superiority is infused in our society and each person's consciousness that if we have a darker skin color, we are not in a position of authority. The community needs to take back its heritage, build a stronger community, and reject this society's racist institutions and values.      This chapter is important because there are not many African-American people participating in politics in today's society. Political decisions that "affect black lives have always been made by white people" (pg. 22) as no one else stands up and makes a change. There is still oppression that does not allow people with darker skin tones to pursue higher education and learn about politics. People need to reclaim history, stop self-justifying guilt, and understand what happened during the time of slavery. They need to get together as a community instead of continuing racism and separating each other. By doing this, the oppressor white society will no longer have control over racial groups. The authors make a convincing argument as it is true how black communities always tend to be looked down on due to the lack of resources provided by the government. Still, suppose they unite and raise challenging questions that challenge the very nature of society itself. In that case, these long-standing institutions and beliefs will have to change.       This article had no contradictions or inconsistencies, but this was consistent with the book The  Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness.  This book talks about the oppression of the white people towards African-Americans through history. Europeans rewrote history to keep African- Americans oppressed to control them and feel ashamed of the distorted representation of African history. This new information expands my current understanding of this topic. It further explained the concept of colonial mentality, which is the notion of a slave state still present. The cumulative experiences continue oppression with under-resourced neighborhoods, unequal pay, and unequal employment opportunities. The intended audience for this reading is the African- American community. This book calls them to unite, build a sense of community and define their own goals to lead their organizations and support each other. I do not see any limitations of this article. Still, some assets were the quotes at the beginning of the chapter, which gave the reader something to keep in mind while reading the book. The authors handled the material appropriately provided its intended purposed. The strongest parts of this reading were the way the authors call on the community to unite and fight against individual and institutional racism in a smart manner.     I found significant parts of this reading because we all need to be united against colonizing ideals and rulings that should have died long ago. This white mentality imposed in schools and
media needs to stop and embrace individualism, heritage, and culture. This information expanded my understanding from other topics such as  Lies my Teacher Told Falsification and Me of Afrikan Consciousness. If I could ask the authors two questions, I would ask them. Do you think there is psychological control over African-Americans' minds of African-Americans? And What are some ways to reject racist institutions and values?   Works Cited Ture, Kwame and Charles V Hamilton.
