1 Module 6 Assignment Shawna Soard Southern New Hampshire University CJ 315: Victimology Professor David Conn December 3, 2023
2 Module 6 Assignment Merriam-Webster defines empathy as “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.” (Merriam Webster, 2009). Simply put, empathy is the ability to make a connection with another person. While empathy is necessary in every part of the criminal justice system from law enforcement officers to victim advocates, judges, and correction officers along with the many others in the criminal justice system it is necessary to show the victims as well as community members that they are understood. By showing empathy it will also help to have more communication between community members and local law enforcement when problems arise and will give a better place for all to live. 911 dispatchers are the first responders for the victims of robbery, and it is important for them to be empathetic and keep the victim calm and to get information about what happened and the address as well as if the suspect is still in the house. The officer that is first on scene must also show the victim understanding, support, and that it is not their fault. The officer must show a connection to the victim and not blame them for the robbery (RSA, 2013). By the officer showing a connection to the victim, the victim then feels as though they matter to the officer and that their situation is being taken seriously. They then feel more at ease in their communication with the officer and are more willing to share details of what happened and more confident that their robber will be caught, and justice will be served. Some appropriate responses to a victim of robbery would be the officer stating that he/she is glad that they called the police and told them about the robbery (RSA, 2013). The officer understands the victim is in a difficult situation that is stressful both physically and emotionally and they go out of their way to make a connection with the victim. An inappropriate response
3 would be blaming the victim such as saying well if you had locked your door this wouldn’t of happened or if you didn’t leave your window open then the suspect would not have gotten in. Another inappropriate response would be starting the sentence with the phrase at least and trying to give them a silver lining (RSA, 2013). An example would be at least they only took your laptop and DVD player and left your coin collection. The officer giving an appropriate response and letting them know their next steps and handling the entire situation professionally will put the victim at ease and trust in the police department and criminal justice system. An inappropriate response will lead the victim to be distrustful of the police department and in using them if another crime happens. It also has the victim as well as anyone they talk to believe they were treated unfairly and with an us-versus-them mentality (Posick, 2015).
