Create a hypothesis statement based on the question provided by your GLA.
Hypothesis - Paper towel A holds the most water out of the three paper towel types because of
its weight due to the study, compared to the other paper towels. Paper towel A has a different
texture than the other paper towels allowing it to hold more water.
Describe the methods used to carry out your experiment. Refer to the background information
on writing methods.
Fill the beaker to 100m. Fold the paper towel five times into a small square. Next, put the paper
towel in the water in the beaker. Leave the paper towel in the beaker for 10 seconds. Lastly,
take the soaked paper towel out of the water and weigh it on the scale.
B1 - 1.6 grams before water, 17.7 grams after water soak
B2 - 1.6 grams before water, 17.0 grams after water soak
A1- 2.8 grams before water, 32.0 grams after water soak
A2 - 2.8 grams before water, 31.4 grams after water soak
C1 - 1.8 grams before water, 24.7 grams after water soak
C1 - 1.8 grams before water, 24.1 grams after water soak
A1 - 29.2
B1 -15.1
C1 - 22.9
A1 - 28.6
B2 - 14.4
C2 - 22.3
Briefly describe the results of your experiment.
Based on the amount of grams absorbed by both towels, it is clear that paper towel A is
stronger than paper towel B.
Based on your results, explain how your hypothesis was supported or not supported. (2 pts)
My hypothesis was supported because of how well paper towel A did during the process. With
nearly double the amount of grams absorbed, paper towel A had the most success compared to
the other towels.
Given the information you received from the class data, how would your hypothesis change?
My hypothesis would change if I were not to receive the data I did. However, since my
hypothesis was correct it did not change my original hypothesis.

If ethanol (density = 0.784 g/mL) were used rather than water (density =0.998g/mL) to determine the density of the irregularly shaped marble pieces in question 6, how would the results have been affected? Clearly explain your answer. Assume the marble pieces do not dissolve in ethanol. Also, state clearly by circling the correct phrase before your explanation, if the reported density would be higher, lower or the same as that determined in water.
A) Circle the correct choice: The reported density would be higher, lower or the same as the density determined in water.
B) Write your explanation below:

In a test tube, dissolve 10 drops of methanol in 3 ml. of water. Oxidize a copper wire spiral by passing it through a Bunsen burner. Plunge the red-hot wire into the alcohol solution several times, cooling the solution under the tap (faucet) so as not to evaporate too much of it.
Next, add 1 drop of 0.5% resorcinol solution. Measure 2 ml. of concentrated sulfuric acid (CAUTION!) and pour this carefully down the sides of the test tube containing the mixture. Note the color of the zone intermediate between the acid and the solution.
