Plant Pathology 200 – Fall 2023 Macrotheme 1 – Organic vs. Conventional Produce The issue: Should university dining halls serve only organic produce? The situation: You encounter a fellow student on the quad who is trying to obtain signatures to force University of Illinois dining halls to serve organically grown produce instead of conventional foods. This switch would increase the cost of meal plans by 5-10%. Since you live in a university dorm and eat at the dining halls, this switch would greatly affect you. You wonder if the switch to organic produce has any benefit and if the benefits are worth the cost. You decide to do some research and then write a letter to the editor of the Daily Illini stating your opinion on whether or not the university dining halls should switch to serving only organically grown produce. The assignment: Write a letter to the editor of the Daily Illini newspaper expressing your view on whether or not University of Illinois dining halls should make the switch to organically grown produce. Some questions to consider: How is the production of organic produce different than that of conventional produce? What types of pesticides are commonly used on produce sold in the United States? What are the risks of pesticides to your health and to the environment? Are there benefits to eating organically grown produce? Does organic produce have fewer “forever chemicals”? Are the benefits associated with organic produce worth the higher cost? Your audience: The Daily Illini Draft 1: Informational draft, due 8/28 at or before 8:00 am (At least 2 full pages) Draft 2: Opinion draft, due 9/11 at or before 8:00 am (At least 3 full pages) Draft 3: Opinion draft, due 9/25 at or before 8:00 am (At least 3 full pages) Criteria to be used in evaluation: 1.
