PHY 101L Module One Lab Report Measurements and Uncertainty Name: Ashley Shaw Date: 01/14/24 Complete this lab report by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Data Data Table 1: Determination of Uncertainty in Lab Balance Trial Washer #1 Mass (g) Washer #1 Deviation from Average (g) Washer #2 Mass (g) Washer #2 Deviation from Average (g) 1 25.21 0.014 25.11 0.034 2 25.18 0.044 25.13 0.014 3 25.26 0.036 25.16 0.016 4 25.23 0.006 25.17 0.026 5 25.24 0.016 25.15 0.006 Average 25.224 25.144 1. Suppose you continued Activity 1 using a third washer of the same type. Would you expect the average deviation from the average mass to be the same or different? Explain your answer. I would not expect the average mass to deviate too much from my washers 1 and 2. The washers are a standard size, and their deviation is low, therefore we can expect the other washers of similar size to have the same deviation as the tested ones.
Data Table 2: Determination of Uncertainty in Common Glassware 250 mL Graduated Cylinder 250 mL Beaker Mass of empty glassware 25.19g 44.43g Volume of water 50 mL 50 mL High volume interval 52mL 53mL Low volume interval 49mL 49mL Average volume 50.5mL 51mL Uncertainty 6mL 8mL Mass of glassware with water 76.58g 97.29g Mass of water 51.39g 52.86g 2. Which piece of glassware has the highest degree of precision? Why? The graduated cylinder has the highest degree of precision because the level of uncertainty was the lowest making the accuracy higher. The beakers uncertainty was higher giving it a larger margin of error. The mass of water for the cylinder was also closest to the measured 50mLs at 51.39 g where the beakers was closer to 53 g.
Data Table 3: Determination of Accuracy in Common Glassware 250 mL Graduated Cylinder 250 mL Beaker Current water temperature 19 c 17 c Density of water at room temperature 0.9984 0.9986 Calculated mass of water 49.92 g 49.93 g Mass of water in Activity 2 51.39 g 52.86 Calculated percent difference 2.944 % 5.868 % 3. Which piece of glassware has the highest degree of accuracy? Why? The graduated cylinder has the highest degree of accuracy due to the lower percent difference. The lower percent shows that the almost 3% margin of error is about half that than the almost 6% of the beaker. The lower the difference the more accurate the method.
