LAB SAFETY QUIZ
CHEMISTRY 1405 Name:___________________________
Watch the safety video produced by the American Chemical Society on safety in the laboratory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9o77QEeM-68
and fill in the blanks with the ONE best answer according to that video. For True and False questions, circle
either the T or F. Have this ready to hand in your first lab session on January 25
th
2021, it is your ticket to enter the lab!
General Safety
1
T or F Always use small containers that you can control when pouring.
2
T or F Read and re-read chemical labels to ensure that you are adding the correct chemical reagent.
3
T or F When diluting conc sulfuric acid, you should always add acid to water
. 4
T or F Keep a stopper of a reagent bottle between your fingers when pouring from a reagent bottle and then set the reagent bottle out of the way.
5
T or F The safe way to smell if your Professor gives you permission is to waft the odor towards your nose.
6
T or F Is it okay to pour excess chemicals back into the reagent bottle from your beaker? 7
T or F When drawing out chemicals always use a pipette
8
T or F It is okay to throw chemicals down the sink. 9
T or F When you have completed your lab, you must
: a. clean the glassware that you used, b. wipe down bench, and c. wash your hands
Bunsen Burner
We learned from the video to never use a Bunsen burner to heat volatile vapours, that could occur if you were taking Organic Chemistry, instead you should use a steam mantle.
The rules to follow when lighting a Bunsen burner include: check the rubber hose for cracks, fit the rubber hose securely to the gas tap, have the gas valve open at bottom of the Bunsen burner, then light with either a match (strike away, turn gas on after match has been lite, that way gas will not escape, light from side so that your match does not blow out) or a striker, if flame properly adjusted place under your set up.
We will go over in our first lab the various colours of the flame: yellow flame is too cool, so open the air hole in the barrel to let in more oxygen for combustion, adjust the bottom valve if the flame is too small or large. Flame should be blue with the tip of the inner cone the hottest part of the flame.
10
If a flame sputters, flares or goes out, 11
T or F Cracks or stars in glassware are not dangerous
12
T or F The best way to heat a test tube is at an angle away from yourself and your neighbours, moving
the test tube, back and forth in the flame
13
T or F Hot glassware glows red.

T or F A hot ring stand glows red.
Thermometers
You will not use a mercury thermometer in this lab only an alcohol thermometer. When finished using a thermometer, remember to lay it down on a wire screen so it does not roll away. 15
T or F A thermometer needs to shaken just like a medical thermometer.
16
T or F A broken thermometer can be thrown in the trash. 17
T or F You should never reach across an open flame.
18
T or F The hottest part of the flame, is the inner blue cone where temperatures can reach up to 600 °C.
Broken Glass
Please note that you will not be asked to bore a hole in a rubber stopper and insert glass tubing! Neither will you use a centrifuge in this lab, but when you do, say in a Biology lab, remember to balance it and don’t try to stop the centrifuge spinning with your hand.
19
One way to prevent accidents is to dress properly. This includes:
A.
no loose
B.
no dangling
C.
tie back long
D.
wear safety E.
use safety F.
wear sturdy

You work in a research organization that is looking for markers of various diseases that can be used as a diagnostic for the disease. It has been reported in the past that high levels of Cu are found in the sweat of people with cystic fibrosis. One of the research projects is focused on looking for high levels of Cu in samples that can be obtained non-invasively such as saliva, sweat, hair, nails, etc.
The lab will analyze large samples for Cu. What instrument would you recommend purchasing to support this work, Atomic absorption spectrophotometer or an inductively coupled plasma atomic spectrophotometer? Explain the basis for your decision.

Many common materials that we ingest, though quite safe in reasonable quantities,
become toxic when taken in very large doses. A measure of toxicity is the LD 50 value
(Lethal Dose, 50%). It is the quantity of material, expressed in mg of material per kg of
subject-body-weight that, if administered to a population of subjects, would cause
50% of the population to die. The LD 50 value for FD&C Red Dye No. 40 is >10,000
mg/kg in rats. Assume that the LD 50 value for humans is the same as for rats.
Calculate the number of mg of Allura Red present in an 12 fluid ounce glass of the
beverage you used in this lab. Assume that the concentration of Allura Red in the
beverage is 0.000034 M.
The molar mass of Allura Red is 496.42 grams/mol
