CF 209 Final
Family Systems Theory 1.
Identify at least two issues / concerns from the vignette that align with the theory selected. (4 points)
The family doesn’t have a organized family structure and there is a extreme lack of stability and communication. The parents are often fighting and avoiding each
other, even when it comes to topics about the kids such as Zach’s curfew. The family relies on Tom’s income as Maria has a low paying job, but Tom could be laid off soon. Zach has taken on his father’s role in the household which causes more issues as he is only 16 years old, and sometimes disciplines his little sister. Annie feels isolated and doesn’t know how to process the stress and fighting, so she withdraws to social media. The family is falling apart from the stress of Tom’s affair, the possible
layoffs, and the families lack of communication. 2.
Appropriately explain with sufficient detail how the theory selected can be used to understand the two issues identified. (8 points)
a.
You must speak to a minimum of 2 terms/concepts associated with the theory. Please bold each term/concept. Roles and equilibrium. The roles of the family have been completely mixed and thrown off the equilibrium. The issue of Zach taking on his father’s role has caused him to believe he should be treated more like an adult and wants a longer curfew time, which is another topic of argument with the parents. The arguing and lack of boundaries with roles has caused the equilibrium to be off, and the family is barley functioning. The family is deeply lacking stability and everyone is trying to cope in their own ways to maintain their own personal equilibrium within the household. 3.
Offer two detailed recommendations to improve family functioning that align with the theory selected. Do not give generic recommendations such as seek counseling or communicate more (4 points) I think Tom needs to be more present and stop avoiding his problems, even if him and his wife get a divorce. The children still need their father’s presence, which would allow the roles to be more normal and Zach doesn’t have to take on more responsibilities. The family equilibrium and roles should g back to normal if Tom starts participating in the family. I also suggest that the parents sit down and talk, maybe with a marriage councelor, about what
has happened. Tom is completely avoiding the situation, and is causing a bigger rift in their relationship. Conflict Theory 4.
Identify at least two issues / concerns from the vignette that align with the theory selected. (4 points)
There are micro-level conflicts in the family, such as the arguing and the fighting for power. The parents are constantly arguing about any topic they can, and it is deeply affecting their relationship, and their relationship with the children. Annie feels as though they don’t care about her anymore and Zach has taken on his father’s role. There’s also the power dynamic that Zach seems to be fighting for as he’s getting older and taking on more responsibilities. Zach feels like his mother is treating him like a child and wants a later curfew. He is also discipling Annie and acting as his father would. 5.
Appropriately explain with sufficient detail how the theory selected can be used to understand the two issues identified. (8 points)
a.
You must speak to a minimum of 2 terms/concepts associated with the theory. Please bold each term/concept. Structural inequality and competition. The family has a very inequal structure, where Tom was apart of the hierarchy of his family and has completely pulled away. So now it feels as though this place of power fall onto Zach, which doesn’t work as he shouldn’t be discipling his younger sister and taking on father responsibility at 16 years old. This also makes a sort of competition between Tom and Zach as Zach is fighting for his father’s role and power. But Maria is really the only one opposing it, as Annie is too disconnected from her family to care and Tom is pulled away from his family. 6.
Offer two detailed recommendations to improve family functioning that align with the theory selected. Do not give generic recommendations such as seek counseling or communicate more (4 points) I believe the parents need to be on the same page on how to discipline their children
and the boundaries they want to lay out. Their children should be just kids, and not worrying about adult/father responsibilities yet. They also need to discuss the dynamic of power because Zach shouldn’t be in charge or challenging his parents consistently. Zach needs to be told he shouldn’t be discipling Annie and needs to just
be a child himself.
Family Stress Theory 7.
Identify at least two issues / concerns from the vignette that align with the theory selected. (4 points)
There is constant fighting between Tom and Maria, which is causing stress and tension for the whole household. The arguing is because of Tom’s affair, and the parents not being able to have a consistent front when discipling and laying out boundaries with the children. Tom doesn’t see an issue with Zach having a later curfew, but Maria disagrees. There is a consistent lack of communication and understanding between the parents. Since the affair, the parents seem to be disconnected and undermining each other. 8.
Appropriately explain with sufficient detail how the theory selected can be used to understand the two issues identified. (8 points)
a.
You must speak to a minimum of 2 terms/concepts associated with the theory. Please bold each term/concept. Stressors and resources. The affair is the main stressor between Tom and Maria. The affair has caused constant arguing and is causing tension within the family. There is a lack of resources with Tom’s absence in the family hierarchy. Tom stays at work or goes to the gym to avoid being at home, which is affecting his relationship with his wife and children. The family doesn’t seem like it can cope with Tom’s affair as they haven’t talk about it, or the possibility of Tom losing his job. There is a extreme lack of communication between the parents which could lead to a crisis that they haven’t talked about or planned for. 9.
Offer two detailed recommendations to improve family functioning that align with the theory selected. Do not give generic recommendations such as seek counseling or communicate more (4 points) I believe that Maria and Tom need to sit down and sort out their own issues, either come to an understanding or a separation, as the current situation is not healthy for the children. After that, they need to get on the same page about parenting and the boundaries with their children. Mainly with Zach, as he is getting older and pushing to be more of an adult. Tom needs to be a father again to his children and help take care of their needs. The parents also need to address the concerns with Annie and help her become connected the family again and feel cared for. There needs to e a

5. The car you have been driving has a posted fuel
consumption of 10.0 L/100 km (city) and 7.1 L/100 km
(highway) according to the EnerGuide information. Overall,
your actual fuel consumption has averaged 10.5 L/100 km.
a) Is this better or worse than the posted fuel
consumption? b) Provide three reasons why your actual
fuel consumption may be different from the posted
consumption. c) List three ways in which you could
improve your fuel consumption (other than buying a new
carl).

Calorimetry of Metals Lab
Set up a boiling water bath of 250 mL of water in a 400L beaker at 325 degrees C. Placed a test tube of 13.88g of aluminum into boiling water. Boiled for 20 minutes and reached a temp of 99.0 degrees C. Set up a "coffee-cup" calorimeter with a volume of 50mL of water. Assume the water has a density of 0.997 g/mL. Initial temp of 50mL of water is 22.2 degrees C. Dumped the test tube of heated aluminum into calorimeter. Final temp of 50mL of water is 26.4 degrees C. Calculate the specific heat of the aluminum. Use the specific heat of water as 4.184 J/g*degrees C.

Anna was asked to identify and explain if the equation CO2 (1)-CO2 (g) was an
endothermic or exothermic reaction. However she got it wrong. What is her error
and what should the answer have been?
Anna's statement : The equation is an endothermic reaction because the energy is
released from gaseous CO2 to the surroundings to become liquid CO2 causing
the molecules to slow down.
