Criteria Japan Mexico Canada Authority Figures Japanese are always conscious of their hierarchical position in any social setting and act accordingly. Japan is also a meritocratic society. Japan operates as a united structure when it comes to authority. The order come from superiors, and they are obeyed without any pushback. Mexicans prioritize hierarchical relationships. They respect authority and look to the superiors for guidance. Rank is important and it is disrespectful to break the chain of hierarchy. Canadian businesses had traditionally been hierarchical, but flattened hierarchy are gaining ground . Canadians respect those in authority positions and will trust them. Address individuals as Mister or Miss until they invite you to address them otherwise. Levels of Formality Japan is a collectivistic society. There is a spokesperson of the company, but they credit the accomplishments together as a group effort. The role of each individual is defined through the hierarchical structure, and everyone is aware of this. Always know who the senior person is in the room and show respect. Sometimes meetings start off with questions about your personal background, family, and interests. So, prepare to get personal. Learning a little bit of Spanish is a great gesture. Canadian businesspeople often begin their relationships in a professional manner and tend to become less formal once people are more familiar with each other. Business cards should have one side English and the other side French. Presentations are expected to be short and clear. Social Norms It is expected to greet everyone in the room individually, no matter the size of the group. The host of the meeting will indicate where the guest will sit, and the high-ranking individuals will sit Shake hands with everyone in the meeting upon arrival and when leaving.
