Session 1 Response Paper Jamie Miller CCU HCA-330 Cassie Clinton July 30, 2023 Session 1 Response Paper There were similarities with the AMCHE and Rae’s position in chapter one. Rae discusses a correlation between the good life and morality. Our textbook maintains that being a good moral person leads to a good life. Essentially, good things happen to good people. This aligns with the ACHE as they state (Under missions and values)“ Healthcare Executives. Conduct professional activities with honesty, integrity, respect, equity, fairness and good faith in a manner that will reflect well upon the profession.” ( Code of Ethics , 2022) In this example the text book and the code of ethics compliment each other. We also see the exact opposite, when we examine morality vs the law. These can bring up a ethical dilemma when the two conflict. Ethical decision-making must be guided by a strong moral compass. Creating an ethical environment can empower staff that can freely express their abilities and talents. This also allows individuals to take ownership of their work. These individuals then feel valued. A “good” administrator/manger knows that high quality care and ethical practices, drive a organization to success
The moral responsibilities of a successful healthcare administrator are to lead with the same traits that Jesus led with. We can navigate dilemmas from a Christian perspective. The Code of Ethics acts as a tool to aid in daily dilemmas. We can use it, in addition to morality, to steer the direction of an organization. It is our duty to build a strong cohesive staff. We must not be divided, but instead be united with the same values and goals. (We are a team, divided we fall) This ensures goals are being met. We can pair this, with open communication, which ensures a positive mindset. This brings up the quality of care. Bringing spirituality into the work place is a good thing. It supports the individual, the staff and the organization. It would be a great idea to have a chaplain/pastor work alongside staff, creating an inclusive environment. Having this input would be a great addition to any healthcare team. (an example of this would be a hospital) Future leaders must accept the challenges that healthcare brings, and utilize these tools, to build a strong foundation. There is an example of a potential conflict when examining law vs morality. The text also states, on pg 16 “It is quite common today for people to assume, if it’s legal its moral.” ( Code of Ethics , 2022) This causes a ethical dilemma. In this example Rae and the ACHE, could potentially conflict. With regard to morality vs the law, a person shouldn't do something bad or unethical, just because the law states it’s “ok”. As leaders, we must be prepared to deal with ethical dilemmas. It's great to be able to use a scripture, or spiritual experience to guide our decisions. We can also combine the knowledge from the code of ethics, to create an ideal environment. We can allow spirituality to guide our ethics. We must take law vs morality into consideration while we implement ethical practices. Successful implementation ensures strong leadership and values. Other nations rely on donated medical services, universal coverage systems, and may be forced to go without medical services. Quality of care may be compromised, when there’s an increase in quantity of patients. We see longer waits for medical care. We have seen this in alot of the universal healthcare systems. Higher budgets and more spending, does not mean better healthcare. Other weaknesses include a national shortage of medical staff, lack of retention, outdated medical facilities, and poor outcomes. These
are the times when spirituality and ethics can guide us. A good healthcare administrator/manager will be able to apply spirituality to help define workplace ethics. Having a Biblical worldview can help us out of these conundrums. These traits are a great addition to any leader. They are vital to success of an organization and its leadership. Applying ethical leadership in the workplace is essential. Making quick decisions, and leading by example, creates a positive culture. Our spirituality guides us, while practicing, best practices and defining values, we can lead an organization. This ensures high quality care and services. Upon further research I found that the SHRM Speakers Bureau, a corporate leadership trainer, recommends the following.“Some ethical best practices worth considering:Err on the side of over communicating and come from transparency.Remember the golden rule: What you want for yourself, give to another. ” ( The Real-World Impact of Workplace Ethics , 2023, p. 4) Work place ethics defiantly have a strong impact on day-to-day operations. In conclusion, A “good” healthcare administrator will have a strong commitment to ethics. I have determined that morality and ethics are intertwined. The ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) provides a strict code, that established standards for decision-making and conduct. These standards, help to guide us in building and providing an ethical culture/work environment. Scripture and Christian perspectives help us to be guided by good morality. A specific scripture that support my view is 1 Corinthians, it states “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” (1 Corinthians 1:10 ESV, 2004-2021) Removing barriers and empowering others to be the best version of themselves ensures a successful organization. Servant leadership can inspire greatness. Works Cited
