2 Session 5 Lessons Learned Six Sigma Lean is important because it can help the healthcare administrator achieve consistent improvements with data-driven results. It strengthens teaming and collaborations and expedites communications. This helps to steer any organization in the proper direction. We can increase workflows and reduce errors. This helps improve the quality of patient care. The Six Sigma Lean method is diverse and can be applied to any industry. My perspective fromt he beginning to the end of this class changed drastically When the course first started, I wasn't familiar with those methods, tools and solutions. I was worried about it being math-based and, in my mind, that wasn't my strong point. At the end of the course, I was able to apply Six Sigma Lean to the workplace. My view changed drastically as I found this to be a strong point for me. The relationship between Lean Six Sigma, quality improvement, and statistics are interwoven. Each is a tool that helps reduce variation and provides a continuous framework utilizing the DMAIC method. Statistics are a vital part of leadership and making informed decisions. We don't have to guess which leads to more optimal outcomes. Six Sigma Lean can be used to help reduce costly errors and eliminate waste. In the article it states “About $2.6 trillion is spent on healthcare, which is 17.9 percent of US gross domestic product (GDP) and accounts for 54 percent of total federal revenue ([76] Martin et al. , 2011). Due to the trend of medical costs increasing at a rate exceeding that for GDP growth in all
3 developed countries, the worldwide concern about medical expenditures has promoted an awareness of the need for greater effectiveness in healthcare systems ([66] Kumar et al. , 2011).” (Gowen, C. R., III, McFadden, K. L., and Settaluri, S. (2012) This is alot of money to spend and the United States still has poor health outcomes. I feel we really need a healthcare overhaul. Something has got to change, or we will continue to have a failing system that provides poor quality care, and has even worse outcomes. Making informed decisions directly affects the whole healthcare organization. It is the managers' duty to ensure high quality patient care is given. When moral and ethical dilemmas arise, we must not shy away from them. A good leader will lead the way. Upon further research, I found a Biblical perspective that aids the healthcare administrator. Scripture "We must obey God rather than men" (New American Standard Bible, 1960/1995, Acts 5:29). We can take our faith into the work place and use it to navigate dilemmas as they arise. In conclusion, everything I learned in the will help me be a better leader. Works Cited New American Standard Bible. (1960/1995). The Lockman Foundation. (Original work published 1960). Gowen, C.
