2.2 Assignment: Research Brief 1 2.2 Assignment: Research Brief By: Ashley Hicks Indiana Wesleyan University HRM-470-01A Professor Patti Lynn Johnston 01/24/2024 The topic I chose to do my research brief on is "What are the advantages of holding a training program onsite? Off-site?” The decision to conduct training onsite or off-site depends on
2.2 Assignment: Research Brief 2 the organization's specific needs, budget, and desired outcomes. Each organization is different and will have to figure out the best training program for the people for whom they want to do the training program. The advantage of onsite training is saving money & time. You won't have to find a facility to hold your off-site training. Another advantage is security. Depending on your training, being onsite doesn't make you vulnerable to security issues. Also, training can happen right away if it is onsite, as there is a need to find a facility and all the other accommodations it would take to have a training program off-site. Another advantage would be improved Team Collaboration: Onsite training allows team members to learn together, fostering collaboration and shared learning experiences. Onsite training can enhance team dynamics and promote a sense of camaraderie. Being onsite, you can also walk your facility and show the operation in person to the people you are training. You also don't have as much of a chance to zone out when doing an online course. If you are up and walking around or engaging in training, you are more focused and may even get more interested in the topic. "Onsite training refers to education or skill development programs conducted in-person at the workplace or a designated training location. It offers immediate, hands-on experience, fosters team building, and can be tailored to company-specific needs." (Team, 2023) The advantages of off-site training include a different environment that can get your creative juices flowing. When you are in the same space every day, you get in a zombie mode where you aren't really getting out of your head space and thinking outside of the box; changing locations for a few days of training could be the trick to do that. Going off-site and onsite allows your employees to bond with each other outside of their cubicles or office space.
2.2 Assignment: Research Brief 3 Another advantage would be increased focus. You won't be as distracted to check your emails or answer the phone when you are off-site. An excellent advantage is privacy. "Some training sessions or management meetings can address sensitive issues within the office, and it is nice to have those conversations in a third-party location away from the office itself. Privacy will ensure that none of the other employees overhear classified information, and it will prevent a sense of anxiety in the office, which can occur when management is meeting to discuss the state of the company or employee's performances." (Advantages of Off-Site Meetings and Training Sessions, 2017) There are a lot of good advantages to both the onsite and off-site training. But the off-site training is more beneficial. Yes, it may cost more, but the employees would look at it as a reward instead of pesky training. I feel at any cost would be worthwhile to see your employees excited about training. I would enjoy a day away from the office and get out of this stuffy office to a nicer facility that caters to lunch to do some training. I would stay focused, knowing my creative juices would flow! "While some training can be done online or in the office, training is most effective when held in a fresh environment. Management professor Kimberly Elsbach told NPR, "Staying inside in the same location is detrimental to creative thinking. It's also detrimental to doing that rumination needed for ideas to percolate and gestate and allow a person to arrive at an 'aha' moment." (PEERSPACE, 2016) References
