Technology 1 3.5 Technology – Initial Draft By: Ashley Hicks Indiana Wesleyan University HRM-470-01A Professor Patti Lynn Johnston 02/08/2024 STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC HONESTY I have read and understand the plagiarism policy as outlined in the IWU Catalog relating to the IWU Honesty/Cheating Policy. By affixing this statement to the title page of my paper, I certify that I have not cheated or plagiarized in the process of completing this assignment. I also certify that the work submitted is original work specific for this course and to my program. If it is found that cheating and/or plagiarism did take place in the writing of this paper, I understand the possible consequences of the act/s, which could include expulsion from Indiana Wesleyan University.
Technology 2 This paper will go in-depth on technology. Some of the topics being covered will be but not limited to Cost of the technology/ies, Life span of the technology/ies, Skill/s needed to develop training, Skill/s required to use technology/ies, Types of technology, necessary training to use the technology/software, Pros and cons of various technologies/software, Primary technology selected/software, Implementation Plan, Personnel/audience (hire new staff/train existing staff/combination), Strengths and weaknesses of the technologies/software. Technology is fascinating and will be great to explore and learn more about. The Cost of technology has many benefits and many disadvantages. For example, when I was 13 and getting on my vast desktop computer, we had to dial-up, and you couldn't be on the landline attached to the wall simultaneously, or you would get that internet dial-up tone. I also got my first cell phone when I was sixteen and paid for it myself. It was a Nokia brick-shaped telephone. Technology has evolved in the short twenty years. That was my reality. Now, the internet is so speedy you can be on your phone, TV, and gaming systems. The days of slow technology are of the past, and the future can hold nothing but more advances in technology to make the world competitive. "Perhaps the next generation of these technologies will reduce those environmental costs. Typically, the most effective way of dealing with technology costs is to develop new technology to address those costs." (Cohen, 2022) Technology's life span depends on technological advances. Like every year, there is a new phone that everyone HAS to have. I still have a phone from 2021. That is still new, but I know they are working on the latest phones for 2025! "When they were first mass-produced, manufacturers expected electronics to last roughly 40 years. By the 1990s, their lifespan was halved. Today, electronics are typically only used for 1.5 to 13 years, with most averaging 4.5
Technology 3 years." (Quantum, 2021) For example, a tablet can last up to seven years, but I feel it also depends on the user. It will last that long if I use it, but if a toddler uses it, it may only last a year or two. Skills needed to develop and use technology: The way to get the skills to build technology would be to train in the related field of technology if you want more skills. Do some research and ask your leader for help and guidance. Once you obtain the skills and knowledge, practice every day. "With the rise of digital technology and an increased need for technologically proficient people in almost any field, learning technology skills is very important. Technology tools like email, online chat, digital portfolios, electronic databases, and video chat have transformed our everyday lives, with technology permeating nearly every industry. Whether you're a learner, a teacher, or working in an IT job, improving technology skills can help you complete your job more efficiently and navigate this digital world we're living in more effectively." (Staff, 2023) Depending on your age, the training you will need to use the software will depend on the training you need. Anyone willing can learn the software required to be used to have training online. "Computer skills training is prevalent. Some computer training is more introductory. Introductory programs introduce trainees to computer hardware and software, focusing primarily on mastering basic software applications. They do this through manuals and tutorials that provide hands-on, interactive learning. These courses help trainees overcome their fear of computers and better understand how computers work. Applications training covers specific software applications available within an organization. Unlike introductory classes, which can be offered to an entire organization, application training is typically provided as needed. With the availability of online capabilities,

Technology 4 employees can access online computer training at any time." (Werner) Even if you do not want to take a training course, you should always want extra training because it will only benefit you in the long run. My company only did training about a year ago. You came in, they told you what you were doing, and you did it, and most were self- taught. I had to teach myself, which I still do because that is what I know. We are now just getting around to writing and doing the process for some of our job functions. This benefits us and anyone in the future who may come in or if someone leaves and needs to be replaced. "It's no secret that an infinite number of new technologies are available in every industry covering every possible process. Because of that, you have taken the time to really dive into the features and benefits of different software and carefully selected the best one for your company." (Bleich, n.d.) Even if everyone agreed to do training online, there are always going to be pros and cons; some of the pros of training online are it can be done anywhere, your company will cut a lot of costs, and it is easy to train 5 or 1000 employees this way, for the most part with the proper training it is easy to navigate, it has measurability, some cons are some people may feel disconnected, some may not learn with online training, some may see it as extra work, some want to get away from the screen. (Pavlou, 2022) "Software technology has brought significant transformations to our daily lives, both positive and negative." (Hillary, 2023) One of the negative things is that there isn't enough education or training in the technology or software. One standard training model is the "ADDIE model, an instructional design tool to help HR and training professionals create, organize, and streamline effective learning and development programs. Although developed in the 1970s, the ADDIE training model remains
Technology 5 the most commonly used model for instructional design because it's simple yet highly effective." (Vulpen, n.d.) ADDIE stands for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, & evaluate. When used correctly, the ADDIE model can be used in training and learning in any company. It has been used for so long because many people like it and find it easy to use and understand. The best training software around is CYPHER learning, and this was rated the best overall; next in line is TalentLMS, which is best for a free plan. "Employee training and ongoing education are vital to the success of businesses of all sizes. Having the best employee training software allows you to create courses for education, onboarding, and compliance easily and affordably, keep employees engaged with awards, and track employee performance." (Smith, 2024) All kinds of software are available to help any company that wants to add additional training for their company. They need to know what they want and what they need training for. My implementation plan will be to gather information on how to create the best training for 700- plus people in the best way with technology. An online training software would be the best way. After the first launch, we will run diagnostics and evaluations to see how well it went and go from there. The audience would be the 700-person U.S. Staffing firm, the CEO, my HRD team, and anyone from corporate. I would train the existing staff with the implementation plan. With any software you choose, there will be strengths and weaknesses of the software or technology. There isn't a right or wrong if you want traditional training or software learning. You have to find the best one for your company, and I believe that offering an online training portal would be the best way for our company, with 700 plus people spread all over the U.S.. "Environmental constraints include an organization's legal, social, political, and economic
Technology 6 issues. Constraints often fall within the threat area of an organizational SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. (Werner) Some strengths of a training program are that you would have increased engagement, productivity boost, and enhanced goals. Some of the weaknesses are time constraints and resistance to change. "Our world has noticed a sizeable jump in technology in the past two decades, with technology permeating almost every thinkable industry. This includes the corporate training industry, where technology, in the form of eLearning, is being received quite well by corporate employees and L&D trainers/managers alike." (Sengupta, 2019) My conclusion after my outline is that training is essential in any form, but how you utilize it correctly for your employees matters to each company. Not everyone will learn on-sit well, and not everyone will know off-sit very well. If you offered some on-site and some online courses, it would still weigh down some of the heavy travel expenses.
