4GR3 Business Workbook Part 1 – Setting Leadership and Career Goals 1. Leadership: Self-Assessment When growing and developing as a leader, it is critical to consider feedback about your leadership from a variety of sources including yourself, those you lead, and those who lead you. 4GR3 provides an opportunity for you to practice, hone, and reflect on your own leadership development journey in a ‘real world’ context. In 1GR0 , you learned about how you see yourself on traits that influence your leadership. Understanding your motivations, traits, and beliefs and how they relate to leadership can help you guide your vision for the type of leader you want to be, regardless of the situation you are in. In 2GR0, you received feedback about your leadership from your business simulation group members, allowing you to gain insights into whether your leadership impact matched your intention. In 3GR0 , you gained insights into who/what groups you prioritize when making decisions, and how this is related to your Values. Review your Personalized Leadership Reports from 1, 2, and 3GR0 to remind yourself of your unique leadership skills, traits, and behaviours before you answer the questions below. If you do not find your personalized leadership report, review the sample report in Avenue to Learn to review the concepts we covered. 1.1. Team Role Think back to the Belbin Team Role activity you completed in class and answer the following question. Identify traits, motivations, and behaviours outlined in your 1GR0, 2GR0, and 3GR0 Personalized Leadership Reports that you believe influence the team role(s) you tend to identify with and describe how they do so. a) First, mark top 2 with an ‘X’; then b) Provide (in bullet points) evidence from your GR0 Personalized Leadership Reports and your past project roles at school or in your community and relationship circle as to why you are pre-disposed to take on these roles. o Personality Traits (1GR0 Report), o Motivation/ Interests or Values (3GR0 Report—Shareholder/Stakeholder Values), o Strengths / Talents, o Other behavioural evidence (2GR0 Report)—Status, Power, Leadership Emergence) Belbin’s Team Role Roles you Take Evidence Shaper Plant
Co-ordinator Monitor Evaluator Resource Investigator Implementer X As a crucial team member of an international business team project, most of the other team members started slacking off towards the end of the project, I actively finished most of the work despite the unmotivated team dynamic and negativity surrounding me. When it comes to group discussion or brainstorming, I always prefer to tackle the existing problems from a systematic thinking structure. My personality traits demonstrate that I am a highly reliable person at work who prioritizes main tasks over anything else. I am a maniac when it comes to self- discipline and personal health. Thus, I’ve been stuck to a consistent and strict training and diet for many years. Team Worker X As a team member of all the team projects that I have participated in, I am always willing to communicate and support my members to make sure that they are in an excellent state of mind during any stage of the project. Sometimes when unexpected situations happen, such as the absence of a group meeting or presentation, I would actively contact both sides to see how the situation can be adjusted to the best extent that doesn't hurt our final goal. One of my personality traits illustrates that I am a great listener who actively engages with others while they are talking. As a result, people tend to share more information and build trust with me. When it comes to group work, I always encourage others to share their opinions and never judge them despite the divergence of opinions. Completer - Finisher Specialist 1.2. Career Goals Your consulting projects are a great opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in real-world situations. It is a chance for you to take what you have learned over the course of your degree program and apply it to a specific problem or challenge. Work through these projects from beginning to end, leveraging your technical knowledge, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking skills you have developed as a BCom student. The experience and skills gained through this experience will be a strong foundation for understanding career success especially as it relates to working on project teams with deadlines and tight turnaround times. To maximize your experience in 4GR3, take time to reflect on your previous experiences and professional development and answer the following questions: 2.1. What new knowledge and skills would you like to develop through the project experience? As a 4th-year commerce student, my goal for this class is to gain more hands-on practical knowledge that I can implement in real-life business scenarios. Thus, I believe that the component of working with actual business owners and pitch presentations would be considered a great opportunity for me to challenge myself and get one step closer to the real business world. Besides, my leadership and communication skills are the other two things that I am eager to improve since they are the most valuable skills when it comes to not only working with people in general but also helping a lot in any form of interaction in life. 2.2. Reflect on your upcoming project experience and identify opportunities for alignment with your future career goals. (tips – consider subject matter expertise, opportunities to build your network, technical and professional skills, career clarity, project management, and other transferable professional skills) Besides the fact that I will be able to acquire more theories and knowleage relate to leadership that I may never hear of before this course, the opportunity provided for us to work with actual business owners is a fantastic task for me to tackle the project with existing business skills, both technical and soft skills. On top of this, I want to use this great chance to network with those professionals and hopefully get the chance to line up an interview with them to get started my career. p. 4
