1 Module One Assignment Dianna Sheely Southern New Hampshire University BUS 225: Critical Business Skills for Success Cynthia Daniel May 4, 2023
2 Module One Assignment Application When making business decisions, it is essential that we use critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills help you interpret information, evaluate arguments, and propose explanations. (Soomo, 2002) Critical thinking helps us to evaluate the situation or problem from all sides, research our sources, and interpret and analyze all the information we have been given before deciding on a solution or change. In 2018, The Walt Disney Company decided to strategically reorganize its businesses into four segments: the newly formed Direct-to-Consumer and International; combined Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products; Media Networks; and Studio Entertainment to maximize their reach and company profits. In a company announcement, they stated this change was “To capitalize on today’s rapidly changing media landscape and more closely align with the company’s priorities for future growth”. (Bruce, 2018) With changing platforms, they have continued to reevaluate and research the results of that reorganization and make changes to adapt to current trends and evolving technologies. In 2020, Disney announced another strategic reorganization: “In light of the tremendous success achieved to date in the company’s Direct-to-Consumer business and to accelerate its DTC strategy further, Disney’s world-class creative engines will focus on developing and producing original content of the company’s streaming serving.” (Business Wire, 2020) Analysis The Walt Disney Company began as a cartoon studio in the 1920s. The mission of The Walt Disney Company is to entertain, inform and inspire people around the globe through the power of unparalleled storytelling, reflecting the iconic brands, creative minds, and innovative technologies that make ours the world’s premier entertainment company. (Disney, 2020) Disney utilizes a decentralized cooperative multidivisional (M-form) organizational structure. ( Organimi [Interactive Chart] 2023) Disney can focus on different business types by using a decentralized cooperative multidivisional organizational structure. This structure is common in diversified companies with a wide breadth of operations, especially where these operations are carried out globally. ( Organimi [Interactive Chart] 2023) With the success of Disney's newest platform, Disney+, they continue to diversify the media and entertainment divisions of the company.
3 Disney initiated its diversification strategy on December 16, 1929. The Disney brothers’ partnership was replaced by four companies: Walt Disney Productions, Ltd.; Walt Disney Enterprises; Liled Realty and Investment Company; and the Disney Film Recording Company. (D23, 2023) Disney’s history shows that the company has worked to bring new technology and products to consumers while staying loyal to its origins. Disney continues to look for innovative ways to entertain the masses. Disney Research lab supports The Walt Disney Company, and its purpose is to research new technology and scientific innovations that will help advance its media and entertainment efforts. Disney realized in 2018 that the landscape for media, entertainment platforms, and how consumers wanted content delivered was changing. They did the research, identified their challenge, and used critical thinking skills to develop a plan that paid off—leading to further reorganization due to growth in 2020 and new platform creations for entertainment/media such as Disney+. Conclusion It is evident through today’s success that Disney used critical thinking skills in 2018 when it identified that it needed to create a new innovative platform to distribute media to its customers more conveniently. It continues to do so today. They determined that a structural reorganization would simplify management and allow more room for creating their Disney+ streaming product. By 2020, the success of Disney+ was so large that the company decided to further diversify the Media and Entertainment division to allow for focus on creating original content for this platform. In November 8, 2022, The Walt Disney Co. said its three main streaming services — Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu — had grown their subscriber numbers to more than 235 million as of October 1, 2022. (Picchi, 2022) Disney’s diversification plan to focus on the Media and Entertainment division proved successful. Disney was able to focus on and develop the Disney+ platform, including ESPN and Hulu, and is now one of the largest competitors in that field.
