Organizational Issues and Solutions All People School of the Arts is a brand new charter school that was founded in 2020, and was open to students and their parents starting in the 2022-2023 school year. Since the first year the school has faced an issue among the staff which stems back to overall job satisfaction. The school was founded on the standpoint of social and emotional learning, as many charter schools are, which means that instead of clear discipline for students' behaviors, the students are given a softer approach and the issues are not dealt with entirely. Student behaviors and the lack of discipline is the reason that the turnover rate has been so high. Aside from dealing with the influx of tasks needed done on a daily basis, that pushes teachers past their limits. How can teachers effectively teach if they have to deal with and redirect behavior during instruction time and how can a school run smoothly if teachers are not satisfied and are resigning at a fast rate. According to the mission statement, “schools are a place for equitable collaboration between educators, scholars, families and the broader community” (Empower Community School, 2021). The word collaboration means working with someone to produce or create something, to create a school where all stakeholders work together to create a place where teaching and learning happens. All stakeholders must be satisfied with what they are teaching/learning each day. During the life of the school, there has been very little collaboration between the administration and staff. Increased behavior issues in students, negative interactions with administration, not being able to make their own decisions in their classrooms, and no consistency in with tasks and directions creates the issue of employees not being satisfied with the culture of their jobs. 2
The current culture of the school is very unsupportive, teachers don’t have the support that they need to efficiently teach students and create a positive classroom environment. Having a school environment where teachers do not have a voice when they want to get help with the problems they face, instead they feel like the issues are their own. The current environment feels overwhelmed with their workload and no help with their day to day needs. Currently, there is a national teacher shortage. The shortage means that a lot of students across the country do not have a teacher in front of them. According to the article from the Learning Policy Institute, the teacher shortage is due to the lack of support from administrators and the challenging working conditions (McKenna, 2018). According to the same article, if teachers are given mentoring, collaboration, and adequate resources, the turnover is cut by a large margin (McKenna, 2018). The weakness of this charter school is due to those in management (administration). The main weakness is the lack of employee satisfaction on the job, which means a high turnover rate. In the current school year, at least 4 teachers have resigned from their positions at this school due to the school’s culture and the lack of job satisfaction. Another weakness that the company faces is inefficient processes and systems. Teachers have an overwhelming workload and no help with their tasks, teachers have to teach more than one subject with no consistency in curriculum. There are a few recommendations that I can offer the company to help with the issues that are faced by employees. The first recommendation I can offer is creating a space where employees can voice their issues without feeling backlash about what they are dealing with. Employees should be able to see a change in the issues that they bring up to administration. Giving teachers the autonomy to teach their students in a way they feel will best benefit their students, instead of being micro-managed by someone that is not in the classroom. There should 3

also be discipline and consequences for students that disrupt the learning environment, that way teachers are able to teach their children in an inviting environment. In conclusion, job satisfaction is a key component in keeping an organization going strong. If employees are satisfied with the job that they are doing on a daily basis, it will create higher efficiency with job performance. The key to increase job satisfaction the organization has to create an environment where employees feel like their voices are heard and the environment is positive and inviting. 4
