Provide an example of a time you have engaged in both formal and informal professional networks. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type? Hello Class, In business communication, it is important to understand the difference between formal and informal professional networks to build business relationships, professional development, and to contribute to the success of a business. A formal professional network is an established communication channel in an organization. A formal network is one in which employees communicate specifically in the workplace. A formal network can essentially be communicating through a chain of command, business meetings, and interdepartmental communication. Informal professional networks have no official channel and individuals can communicate freely in any direction. An example of an informal channel is a group of coworkers chatting on their lunch in a break room or at a corporate event. The advantages of formal communication is creating opportunities to communicate for business development. The disadvantages of informal communication is that at times it can be diluted, misinterpreted, and create opportunities for gossip.
