Tool Analysis 1 Adriana Carroll DAT-515 Southern New Hampshire University January 28 th , 2024 Tool Analysis
2 INTRODUCTION The network of Third Star Financial has several recommendations that will benefit the company in its reorganization and allow the company to operate with a higher level of efficiency. Beyond the reorganization, there are several tools available that can aid in the management of the new network and allow the IT department to effectively operate and remediate. Additionally, there are tools available that can monitor the network. One of these tools is Tableau. Tableau is primarily used as a data visualization tool and can be used to view Third Star Financial’s substantial amounts of data in simple, easy to read formats. According to Team Post at yurbi.com, “...more than 70 percent of Tableau’s customers selected the product because of its ease of use for the business user” (Team Post, 2018). This means that the software is lauded for its ease of use and intuitive interface. This would allow the company to quickly adopt this tool into their daily workflow without much training or complications. BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES However, this does not mean that the tool is without its downsides. The largest downside for the tool is its cost. As of 2024, Tableau would cost the company approximately $900 per user per year and depending on how many users would need/want the software, the company would incur a significant financial constraint. This is also only the costing for the licensing and hosting within the Tableau Cloud. If the company wanted a dedicated server, the cost could increase depending on the company’s needs for support. A second challenge is that even though the tool is intuitive, there is a growing pain to deal with as the analysts and IT department become more proficient with the tool. MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
3 From a management perspective, the tool will require a more involved prescence throughout its installation, implementation of the processes, and the auditing process. This should be the standard procedure for any massive implementation, but this tool needs to maintain an elevated level of visibility due to the sensitivity of the data involved. Management should ensure that the company’s resources are properly allocated for the installation, that training is provided, and that they also understand the software itself. This will allow managers to be involved in the processes involving the tool and allow them to understand its usage for their own purposes. SECURITY AND PRIVACY Moving on, the security of the tool must be considered due to the information it will be analyzing. Tableau allows the user to configure the authentication, data security, and network security involving the tool to fit the company’s needs, so it must be a priority for the IT department to manage proper access controls for the software. Ensure that only individuals who have a need for the software can access the software to properly mitigate the potential insider threat or in the event of a user’s account being exploited. It is important to highlight that Tableau, by default, uses Row-Level security which can be used to filter the data that each user has access to. For example, if a sales employee wishes to access data unrelated to their region, proper Row- Level security will ensure that the employee is unable to. This can be beneficial but only if it is properly implemented. A misconfiguration in the controls will prevent employees from accessing the entire data set they needed and misconstrue the results of their analysis. Works Cited
