Name: Module #: BUS 240 Case Outline 1. List the ethical issues/concerns in this case. Unethical Leadership. The supervisor encouraged some unethical practices and even seemed to encourage them. Steven observed Julie pick up a fallen meat patty from the floor and still pack it for the customer. The shift supervisor should be able to report unethical practices and reprimand Julie instead of engaging in the practice himself. Accountability. When management is not around, the employees play loud music instead of cleaning up for the following day's opening. Steven considered it a fun place as he began working but later saw that such a work environment does help get work done. Employees feel fulfilled and perform if they perform duties as prescribed ( Hassan 554 ). A toxic work environment is created by building a culture in which work is not completed, which removes the ethical aspect of accountability. Lack of feedback. Eating food served from the floor is unhealthy since it might contain harmful bacteria. The shift supervisor sees this happening and does not try to stop this malpractice but instead engages in it. Employees require feedback to track their performance and customer service ( Haldorai et al. ). The employees would not have realized their poor service if it were not for the unhappy customer. Mismanagement of company resources. When Steven approached the open freezer and realized a foul smell, he immediately disposed of the meat instead of waiting for his fellow employees to arrive. The employee in charge of closing the freezer did not mind wasting the meat to be used and yet understood the importance of cold storage. Employees must manage company resources to increase service efficiency ( Hassan 554 ). The company had to spend more money when Steven threw the meat since their central resource was wasted. Unsanitary labor practices. To save time preparing and serving new meat patties, Julie picks up meat patties that have fallen to the floor and continues serving the customer. This practice endangers the customers' health, subjecting the restaurant to health code violations. 2. List the people (person, group, or location such as a city) who are affected in this case. Steven. The employee questioned the restaurant's work practices. Poor working culture did not deter him from taking the correct action. Julie Steven's colleague was serving the customer and engaged in unsanitary labor practices. She did not mind serving dirt meat patties.
Shift Supervisor. The individual who not only saw the malpractice being done but was actively engaging in it. Customers. The individuals who were being served in the restaurant. Restaurant Employees. They played loud music instead of cleaning for the next day's opening.
