ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION This assignment gives you the opportunity to create a job application package. It includes documents that highlight your capabilities, skills, and accomplishments. You will complete this assignment throughout the course, coming back to it to edit and review as you learn more about Business Communication strategies. Revisit work that you have done in prior courses - is there anything you can use from those courses? What about your jobs? What skills have you developed? What about your life experiences? Feel free to use the content you are adding to your LinkedIn profile and expand it with details and examples. Each part of the portfolio will be marked on clarity, content, and organization. Content will be analyzed for the level of quality and evidence of original thought. Look at the rubric for more details and guidance on what the expectation for each section is. Bring a physical copy of the job application package to the mock interview on Day 8 (Oral Presentation Assignment - Mock Interview) and provide documents included in the package to the interviewer if and when they ask for them. They might ask to see samples of work, references, academic accomplishments, and more. You should have them all ready. This is an individual assignment. Plagiarism in this assignment will result in a grade of 0. This Assignment reflects the following COs and LOS: Course Outcome 6: Prepare and submit an effective job-application package. Learning Outcome 6.1: Gather required data. Learning Outcome 6.2: Identify one's own skills, knowledge, and experience realistically. Learning Outcome 6.3: Recognize audiences and organize information according to their needs. ASSIGNMENT STEPS To complete this assignment: 1. Review the resources listed under "Materials and Resources." 2. Research a company that interests you and select one specific position at that company to gear your job application package toward. For example, you might want to apply as a Software Developer at Microsoft or at Tesla as a Project Manager. 3. Have your instructor approve your choice from step 2. Build a Job Application Package specific to the job you want to apply to.
4. In the package, include the following information in one long document, saved with your name and the name of the assignment, as follows: Jane Fonda Job Application Package a. Work Philosophy and Career Goals: i. Work philosophy: 2-3 sentences in a paragraph or point form. Think about what matters to you, what company you would want to work for, and the values of this company. ii. Career goals: 2-3 sentences in a paragraph or point form. Think about where you see yourself professionally in the future. These goals can be about personal growth (a degree or certification) or growth in the company (a leadership role you are pursuing). b. Résumé: a 1-2-page document where you briefly show your experience (work and volunteer) and qualifications (degrees). This information should be in your LinkedIn profile. Tune your résumé to the job description. Use the appropriate template to build your résumé and see rubric for details. Your instructor will show you where to find the templates and give you two template samples. c. Cover Letter: a 1- page document outlining your credentials and interest in the position. This document should complement (add to) the résumé and explain what makes you the perfect candidate for the position. You should tune your cover letter to the job description. Include a strong lead, direct evidence, and a strong closing (as mentioned in the LinkedIn Course listed under "Materials and Resources." Your instructor will show you where to find the templates and give you two template samples. d. References: a list of people (former or current classmates, professors, co-workers, managers) who can verify your character, academic record, or employment history. Include the name, full title, and contact information for each of your references. e. Academic Accomplishments: diplomas, certificates, professional memberships, and awards you may have received. f. Work Samples: depending on your experience and background, this may include writing samples, photos of art, business plan samples, reports, tables, spreadsheets, and more. The work samples you provide should be relevant to your work experience or educational background. g. Testimonials or References: three to five written refences of recommendations from your references (see point c. references). You can also include references from previous instructors in this section. 5. Use consistent font and format through your portfolio: Calibri, size 11- point font. 6.
