Business Research Process Introduction As van Rooij et al. (2019) explain, the doctoral journey is known to be challenging, which results in many students dropping out. There are many reasons that contribute to the challenges associated with studying for a doctoral degree, and it is important for any doctoral student to be aware of these challenges and prepare adequately to navigate around them. According to van Rooij et al. (2019), the research project is one of the contributing factors to the challenges associated with the doctoral journey. For that reason, it is crucial for the students to be aware of what the Doctoral Studies Project (DSP) entails, identify the minimum requirements, and how to integrate them into their work. Just like in any other institution of higher learning, DSP is an indispensable component of the Trident DBA program, serving as the pinnacle of a student’s academic journey. The aim of this paper is to explore three minimum requirements for DSP, hence presenting key information that is required for one to build the ability to recognize how these requirements are integrated into applied research studies. The Minimum Requirements Research Problem Identification and Justification Research problem identification and justification, or simply the problem statement, is a component that is presented early in the DSP. According to Jandris (2023) in the Universal Dissertation and DSP Template, the problem statement does not necessarily have to be long; however, it should be complete. Completing Universal Dissertation and DSP Template (Jandris, 2023) means that the student carrying out the project needs to explain the gap and how they identified it and also show that the identified problem is current, relevant, and important to carry
out research on. For DBA students, the problem statement should be presented in a way that shows that the DSP is an investigation of a problem of the practice (The Doctoral Handbook, 2023). The selected published doctoral study project, “The Effect of Transformational Leadership and Collaboration on Employee and Job Satisfaction in the United States Banking Sector: A Qualitative Descriptive Approach,” by Temitope (2024), clearly identifies the research problem. The research explored in the project is: “the impact of transformational leadership on employees’ satisfaction in the United States banking sector despite the volatile macroeconomic conditions faced by banks.” Having identified the research problem, Temitope (2024) goes further to justify why the problem is worth researching. According to the researcher, there is a gap in the current literature regarding the selected problem. To emphasize the relevance of the problem and why it is important to do research on it, Temitope (2024) explains the complexity that surrounds leadership in the current business world and also says that transformational leadership is the most promising model for addressing the current problem, hence worth exploring in line with the earlier-mentioned problem statement. Research Methodology and Design A well-defined research methodology and design is another critical requirement of DSP. According to Sileyew (2019), methodology and design are the paths through which a researcher decides to conduct the research. Research methodology and design present the technique that will be used in the given research to formulate the research problem and present the results obtained from the data. In addition, the discussion of the methodology and design is expected to show how the research outcome will be obtained in line with the objectives of the research. As per Jandris (2023), research methodology and design should be presented using at least two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, the doctoral student should briefly describe the methodology

selected, offering justifications for why the selected methodology fits their research. Notably, the justification should be backed by citations. In addition, Jandris (2023), in the Universal Dissertation and DSP Template, explains that the student is expected, still in the first paragraph, to explore the alternative methodologies and include a statement about why the selected is the best fit for the research. The end of the first paragraph should usher in the second paragraph, which, as per Jandris (2023), should briefly describe the research design that has been selected. Like in the methodology, the design should be justified and supported by citations. Alternative designs should also be explored, and a statement explaining why the selected design is the most appropriate should be given. In the selected doctoral study project, the requirement of the research methodology and design is satisfactorily met. In the project, Temitope (2024) starts by explaining what the research methodology and design entails and then goes further to explain the methodology and design they selected for their research. The selected project, having explored alternative methodologies, settled for qualitative methodology, as, according to Temitope (2024), this methodology is effective in capturing human experience and providing answers to the research question. In addition, the selected project utilizes a descriptive qualitative research design and gives a good explanation of why it is the most appropriate for the study. Data Analysis and Results Any successful DSP must also have a part that presents data analysis and results. In this section, the doctoral student is expected to employ the appropriate statistical or qualitative methods to analyze the collected data and make meaningful conclusions. Needless to say, the results obtained from the data analysis should connect back to the research problem and make a contribution to the overall understanding of the topic covered in the research project. According to Jandris (2023), when covering data analysis and results, the student should describe the data
analysis process as it occurred. In case the researcher chooses a statistical method of data analysis and results presentation, the standard guidelines should be employed, while, in the case of qualitative, the researcher can organize the section using subheadings to describe the themes/findings. In the selected published doctoral study project, the researcher, Temitope (2024), clearly presents the chapter on data analysis and results. The doctoral student starts with an introduction that briefly explains what the chapter is about in relation to their research. Temitope (2024) goes further to explain the data analysis as it occurred. Given that the selected research is a qualitative study, Temitope (2024) organizes the chapter using subheadings, presenting the findings from the analysis of the data that was collected. How, as a Future Researcher, can I complete a Similar Study Using the Minimum Requirements I Selected for my Doctoral Studies Project? As a future researcher, I can successfully complete a similar study using the minimum requirements I selected in my DSP. First, I would be required to identify the problem to explore in the DSP. As per the requirements, I am expected to clearly state the problem and give a justification for exploring the problem, ensuring that my assertions are backed by the existing literature. Once I have identified and justified the research problem, the next step is to develop the research methodology and design. In particular, I would consider whether a survey-based approach, like in the selected DSP, is suitable for collecting data and also explore the suitability of the statistical analyses and other relevant methods to examine the effect of transformational leadership and collaboration on employee and job Satisfaction in the U.S. Banking Sector. Once done with that, I would proceed to implement a sound data analysis plan, potentially incorporating axial coding to extract meaningful insights. I would then go on to interpret the
results in the context of the research problem, discussing implications and potential areas for further investigation.
