Rudeness in the Business Environment An increasing number of individuals are rude in the workplace, particularly during meetings. According to Odermatt’s research called Incivility in Meetings: Predictors and Outcomes, He identifies actions that violate social meeting norms as uncivil meeting behaviors (Odermatt et al., 2017). Examples include mocking coworkers, assigning unfair responsibilities, and taking phone calls or texting during meetings. These uncivil behaviors can lead to decreased productivity, increased stress, and a negative work environment. Odermatt’s research emphasizes the importance of addressing and preventing incivility in meetings to maintain a respectful and efficient workplace culture (Odermatt et al., 2017). By fostering a culture of respect and setting clear expectations for behavior during meetings, organizations can help mitigate the negative impacts of incivility. Holding training on effective communication and conflict resolution skills can empower employees to address uncivil behaviors constructively. Porath, a professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, talks about the rising prevalence of workplace rudeness in the Harvard Business Review. Over the past fourteen years, ninety-eight percent of workers have encountered rudeness at work, which negatively impacts internal staff relations, consumer perception, and the company’s profitability (Porath, 2019). Even if only one employee behaves rudely, it can deter people from purchasing from that company. The primary cause of this surge in workplace rudeness appears to be stress. Today’s workers are more overworked, time-pressed, and exhausted than ever. This increased tension perpetuates a cycle of rudeness, where one person’s unkind actions provoke similar responses from others. According to Taylor, supervisors often misinterpret staff members who report experiencing rudeness as the aggressors themselves (Taylor, 2019). This misinterpretation can lead to a lack of intervention and resolution, allowing the cycle of workplace rudeness to
continue unchecked. Organizations must address stress management and conflict resolution strategies to combat the negative effects of workplace rudeness on employees and the company. While stress may contribute to a rise in rudeness, it does not excuse it. The Bible emphasizes the importance of loving and respecting others, as stated in Matthew 5:22, and warns against anger towards siblings, as it may lead to judgment. In conclusion, the rising incidence of workplace rudeness stems from heightened stress, leading to significant internal and external issues. As followers of God, we are called to treat others with kindness and not let our stress dictate our behavior. Adhering to this principle can help foster a more civil and positive workplace environment.
