Class, what do each of you think about involving human resources? Who should be responsible for mediating conflicts on teams? In my opinion, human resources can get involved in team conflicts when they affect morale, business performance, or team dynamics. HR can also intervene when conflicts are egregious, personal, or involve employees who are uncomfortable addressing them (Mitchell et al., 2021). Other situations where HR might get involved are when employees threaten to quit, if an employee violates company policy or there have been many attempts to resolve the issue without success. Therefore, in my humble opinion, I believe a team leader should rely on their mediation skills, not their authority when resolving team conflicts. The first step of playing the role of mediator is to understand both of their positions – what one is claiming and the other rejecting, and their interests – why they are making and rejecting the claims. Team leaders can do this in a joint meeting with both parties or in separate meetings. The leader must decide whether to initially meet with the parties together or separately. Both approaches have pros and cons. The goal of the initial meeting is to have them leave with emotions abated and feeling respected by you, if not yet by each other (Davey et al., 2022). With that done, then focus on getting their positions, interests, and priorities out on the table. Throughout the process encourage them to take responsibility for moving toward an agreement. If all efforts fail to produce a settlement, then the team leader may need to impose an outcome that is in the best interests of the organization. At this point, human resources may need to get involved. References Davey L. (2022). The Good Fight: Use Productive Conflict to Get Your Team and Organization Back on Track. Vancouver, Canada: Page Two Books. Mitchell B. & Gamlem C. (2021). The essential workplace conflict handbook. Wayne, NJ: The Career Press, Inc. When a disagreement erupts between two people on a team, it might be tempting to jump in and impose a decision on them. While this may certainly be the fastest (and possibly least painful) way to a resolution, it won’t help your team members figure out how to resolve conflicts on their own.
