Include the following in your explanation: pigmented epithelium, blind spot, photoreceptors, bipolar cells, ganglion cells, optic nerve, occipital lobe, optic tract, optic chiasm The sensory pathway of vision has light absorbed into the retina's photoreceptor and the pigmented epithelium, which then transmits signals through the bipolar and ganglion cells. The signals go through the optic nerve and exit through the blind spot, it then partially crosses the fibers of the optic chiasm. The signal goes through the optic tract, it is then processed in the occipital lobe of the brain. 3. List two (2) differences between the rods and cones Sensitivity to light and spatial distribution. 4. Explain myopia versus hyperopia. How is this visual problem corrected? Myopia is nearsightedness while hyperopia is farsightedness. Myopia can be corrected by using concave corrective lenses while hyperopia uses convex corrective lenses. 5. What is the fovea and where is it located? It is a tiny pit located in the macula of the retina, 6. Explain the sensory pathway of the ear. Include the following in your explanation: cranial nerve #8, temporal lobe The sensory pathway of the ear starts with sound waves entering the external canal, towards the ear drum. The eardrum vibrates due to these sound waves transmitting towards the middle ear bones, the malleus, the incus, and the stapes. The vibrations start to create pressure waves in the fluid within the inner ear, endolymph and perilymph, which stimulate the organ of Corti. The organ of Corti
then uses all the vibrations turning them into electric signals which transmits by the cranial nerve #8 to the temporal lobe of the brain. 7. Which part of the ear is connected to the pharynx? The Eustachian tube. 8. Which part of the ear has fluid under normal conditions? The inner ear, the cochlea 9. Provide two (2) explanations regarding how hearing loss can occur? It can occur due to ear wax buildup and middle ear damage from otitis media or otosclerosis. 10. Malfunction in which part of the ear can cause vertigo? Explain your answer A malfunction in the vestibular system of the inner ear can cause vertigo. The vestibular system contains everything that can detect movement and our equilibrium. If something were to alter the firing rate or due to a viral infection this too can cause vertigo.
