The release of oxygen can be visibly observed in aquatic plants as bubbles. Counting the number of bubbles released over a period of time can serve as a measurement of the rate of photosynthesis. There are factors that can increase the rate of photosynthesis in plants. This simulation will explore those factors. Procedure: You will change the variables and record the number of bubbles released in a minute. Use the clock and the start / stop buttons. Experiment 1: How Does Changing the Light Intensity and Distance Affect Photosynthesis? 1. Make a prediction about what you think will happen: As you increase the light intensity, the number of bubbles will __increase___ 2. Start with the 40W power source and observe one minute. Reset and switch to 100W. Record data in Data table. 3. Reset the simulation and test how changing the distance from the light will affect the rate of photosynthesis, using the 100 W power source. 4. (3/3 A) Light intensity and distance affect the rate of photosynthesis, because light provides the energy needed for photosynthesis, without enough light the plant cannot photosynthesize quickly. This is shown in the lab when we increased the light intensity from 40 W to 100 W and the numbers of bubbles formed doubled. Therefore, increasing light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis and thus the amount of bubbles produced . Distance also affects the rate of photosynthesis because from the results in the lab, its evident that as the distance increases, light intensity decreases. For example when the light intensity was at its highest power but the distance was 100 cm, there were still only a little amount of bubble formed, this is because the light has now become spread over a wider area. www.biologycorner.com

Red and blue lights increase rate of photosynthesis because they are found higher on the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll, and they have longer wavelengths meaning they provide more energy. clear doesn’t increase nor decrease the rate of photosynthesis because it has shorter wavelengths and provides a standard amount of energy. Therefore, the color of light matters because some lights, such as red and blue increase the rate of photosynthesis and produce more bubbles as they provide more energy, while colours like white and greed don’t increase nor decrease the rate of photosynthesis as they provide a standard amount of energy.
