BIO 182 Groupwork Topic 12: Angiosperms Group # Names: For this activity you will need to find information online to answer the questions. That is perfectly fine. What is not fine is the copy and paste answers and make them look as if they are your own – you need to answer IN YOUR OWN WORDS. 1. Above are pictures of figs. Fig trees do not produce flowers. Are figs fruits? (0.5 points) The fig is not a fruit, it is a cluster of flowers and seeds inside a bulb-like stem. 2. Why does the fig require a special pollinator? (0.5 points) So that the pollinator is adapted to navigate the confined quarters of a fig. 3. When the female wasp enters the fig, she loses her wings and antennae while crawling through the narrow passage. She deposits her eggs in the immature seeds and sheds the pollen she collected on another fig tree. What step in the fig’s reproductive cycle is this? (0.5 points) This is the fertilization process. After the female wasp deposited her eggs, she dies. When the eggs hatch, female and male wasps emerge and mate. The males start digging tunnels while the females collect pollen and store the pollen on their bodies. They then leave the fig and fly off to another fig tree, while the males stay behind and die inside the fig. 4. Why do the male wasps not possess any wings? (0.5 points) The males do not leave the fruit, they will make a path for the females to escape.
5. What is the advantage the female wasp has of laying her eggs inside the immature fig seeds? (1 point) Protection of eggs from outside world, inside the fig fruit 6. Why is the relationship between fig wasps and fig trees one of the best examples of coevolution? (1 points) Fig wasps and trees are some of the best examples of coevolution because they evolved together over90 million years are there is isolated species of wasps for fig trees and vice versa. 7. When we eat figs, we usually eat them when they are very ripe. At that stage, are we eating fig wasps when we eat figs? (0.5 points) Depending on how the figs were grown and if they are sterile figs and domesticated or not. If they are domesticated then no, if they are not then yes potentially. 8. What causes the crunchy sound that you notice when eating a fig? (0.5 points) The crunch when eating figs is from the seeds within the fig, not dead wasps. .
