1.3 Lecture Assignment: Taking a closer look at the Endangered Species Act 1. Briefly describe the species, including its identifying characteristics, geographic location, habitat requirements, and dietary information. a. The Black-footed ferret has a black tail tip and dark brown or black legs and feet in addition to light brown fur. Its mask, resembling a raccoon, clearly marks its face. Currently, they can be found in Arizona, Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The shortgrass prairie is the perfect habitat for this ferret. They eat prairie dogs for ninety percent of their diet, with mice, squirrels, and other rodents making up the remaining ten percent (The Nature Conservancy, 2018). 2. How and when did the species become endangered?  At its lowest point, what were population estimates? a. They were intentionally eradicated in 1967 because they were thought to be an agricultural pest, among other reasons that contributed to their endangered status. In addition to the sylvatic disease, another important factor of their endangered status is habitat fragmentation. About twenty-four was the population's lowest point (The Nature Conservancy, 2018). 3. What conservation and management techniques were used to aid the species' recovery?  How did the ESA contribute to their recovery? a. The resurgence of the Black-footed ferret has been facilitated by methods including captive breeding, reintroductions, habitat preservation, and cloning. Federal, state, and private organizations were prompted to assist by the Endangered Species Act, which established legislation protecting the Black- footed ferret and increasing public awareness of this endangered breed (Proctor, 2012).   4. What is the current status of the species in North America?  What are current population estimates?  What are current conservation concerns? a. There are about 300 Black-footed ferrets in the United States, which keeps them on the endangered species list. Disease and habitat loss continue to be the main concerns of these ferrets (Proctor, 2012). References Black-footed ferret . The Nature Conservancy.
