ECED243 SCIENCE STANDARDS Selection NAME: Karla Rosas What age group are you selecting standards for? (1 point) 4- 5 year olds First standard selected (2 points) : SC1.2: Demonstrate awareness of the physical properties of objects. Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): Sink or float. This preschool science activity helps kids learn to construct a hypothesis, conduct a simple experiment, and then sort their findings by property. It also allows them to have a hands- on approach. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) I chose this activity because children love to be able to learn hands on and love any activity that comes with water. It allows them to be involved with bringing in any materials they choose for their experiment. Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) This activity is age appropriate because it allows the children to choose what object they want to use in their experiment and allows them to be able to see the object go down the water or stay up on the water. Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) This activity is effective in teaching the standard because the children can see what happens with their objects the moment, they reach the water. They are able physically see the process of the object floating or sinking. Second standard selected (2 points) : SC4.1: Demonstrate engineering design skills
Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): Ice and salt science experiment, the day prior children will freeze sea creatures in blue water. Once it is frozen completely the children with have different object to try to melt the ice faster to say the animal creatures. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) I selected this activity because it allows the children to be in every step of the activity, it allows them to use any objects they want to try to find the solution that best suits them. Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) This activity is age appropriate because it allows the children to be hands on. It is easily explained to children, they can predict their own observations & witness it. Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) The standard states they will demonstrate engineering design skills and when the children use anything to try to melt the ice, that is what they are achieving. Third standard selected (2 points) : SC3.1: Demonstrate awareness of life Describe one developmentally appropriate activity that addresses this standard (3 points): Differentiate animals from plants, the difference between living organisms and non-living objects. Why did you select this activity? (2 points) This activity the children will go on a scavenger hunt. Before we complete the hunt, we will discuss what objects they will find and what a living and a non-living organism is. They will be guided in finding plants, animals, living organisms and non-living Why is the activity age-appropriate? (2 points) It is age appropriate because it is an activity that they love to do because they can get up and get moving around nature instead of the classroom. Why is the activity effective in addressing/teaching the standard? (4 points) This is effective in teaching the children due to them getting to go find these items and things for themselves. They will be able to associate what a living and non-living organism is and what an animal vs a plant is after completing this activity.
