Results of Carbohydrate Tests Table 1. Reactions for Reducing Sugars and Starch Tube Solution Benedict’s Reaction Iodine Reaction Final color and conclusions Final Color and Conclusions 1 1ml onion juice Teal, negative reaction Foggy yellow, negative reaction 2 1ml potato juice Blue greenish, negative reaction Dark Brown, positive reaction 3 1ml 1% sucrose solution Brown, positive reaction Clear Yellow, negative reaction 4 1ml 1% glucose solution Reddish-Brown, positive reaction Clear Yellow, negative reaction 5 1ml distilled water Clear Blue, negative reaction Clear Yellow, negative reaction 6 Orange-Brown, positive reaction Clear Yellow, negative reaction 7 1ml 1% starch solution Blue , negative reaction Dark Brown, positive reaction 8 1ml of your unknown solution Aqua Blue, negative reaction Light Brown, positive reaction Question 1 Question 2 Which contains more reducing sugars, potato juice or onion juice? How do you know? Answer based on results. Question 3 Question 4 Which colors more intensely for the Iodine Reaction, onion juice or potato juice? Why? Answer based on results. 1ml 1% reducing sugar (fructose) solution Which one of the solutions is the positive control, and which one of the solutions is the negative control for the Benedict's reaction? The positive solutions are 3, 4, and 6. The negative solutions are 1, 2, 5, 7, 8. Out of all of them though 1 is the negative control and 3 is the postive control. Potato juice contains more reducing sugars due to the appearance of the second one appears more foggy and darker indicating a higher sugar level. Which one of the solutions is the positive control, and which one of the solutions is the negative control for the Iodine reaction? Positive solutions for iodine are solutions 2,7,8. Negative solutions for iodine are solutions 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. Out of all of them though the 1 is the negative control and 2 is postive. Potato juice is more intensified for the Iodine Reaction due to the higher presence of sugar which you can tell for the muggy color.
Results of Protein Tests Tube Solution Biuret Reaction Final color and conclusions 1 2ml egg albumin Clear light pink; positive reaction 2 2ml honey 3 2ml 1% amino acid solution Clear with slight blue undertone; negative reaction 4 2ml distilled water Clear with slight blue undertone; negative reaction 5 2ml 1% protein solution Clear dark pink; positive reaction 6 2ml of your unknown solution Clear with slight blue undertone; negative reaction Question 1 The positive control is number 5. The negative control is number 4. Question 2 Which contains more peptide bonds egg albumin or honey? How do you know? Answer based on results. There are more peptide bonds in the egg albumin due to the physical positive reaction. Question 3 Do free amino acids have peptide bonds? No, free amino acids do not have peptide bonds. T able 2. Reactions for Proteins Clear with slight yellow undertone; negative reaction Which one of the solutions is the positive control, and which one of the solutions is the negative control for the Biuret reaction?

Results of Lipid Tests Tube Solution Solvent Properties Conclusions 1 5ml distilled water Bubbles visible while at rest 4 drops salad oil 2 5ml distilled water Foggy, thick, bubbly emulsifier 4 drops salad oil 3 5ml acetone Clear, bubbles that keep getting smaller 4 drops salad oil Tube Solution Sudan IV Reaction Final Color and Conclusions 1 2ml salad oil Clear, bubbly, baby pink appearance 5 drops of Sudan IV 2 2ml honey Clear, slight baby blue undertone 5 drops of Sudan IV 3 2ml distilled water Clear, slight baby blue undertone 5 drops of Sudan IV 4 2ml lipid solution 5 drops of Sudan IV 5 2ml of your unknown solution Foggy pink 5 drops of Sudan IV Question 1 T able 3. Reactions for Lipids Foggy orange pink, cloudy, bubbly layer on top What do you conclude about the solubility of lipids in polar solvents such as water compared to nonpolar solvents such as acetone?
Question 2 What happened when the emulsifier was added? The emusilfer thickened the substance when added to the solution. Question 3 Question 4 Lipids are generally insoluble in solvents that are polar like water for example but they are soluble in nonpolar solvents like acetone. This is due to their hydrophobic behavior. Which one of the solutions is the positive control, and which one of the solutions is the negative control for the Sudan IV reaction? The positive control is tube 2 with the emulsifier and the negative control is tube 1 with the oil. Compare tubes 1 and 3 in the second experiment. What is the distribution of the dye with respect to the separated water and oil? The appearance of the first tube is more pink due to the positive reaction of the solution allowing for there to be more of a physical appearance of the oil in the first tube. This compares to the negative reaction of the third tube in which the clor is clear with a slight baby blue undertone showing no seperation of water and oil.
Results of DNA Tests Tube Solution Dische Diphenylamine Reaction Final Color and Conclusions 1 2ml of 2mg/ml DNA solution Blue-Black 2 ml Dische Reagent 2 1ml of 2mg/ml DNA solution Dark Blue 1ml of distilled water 2ml Dische Reagent 3 2ml of 2mg/ml RNA solution Clear 2ml Dische Reagent 4 2ml distilled water Clear 2ml Dische Reagent 5 2ml of your unknown solution Clear 2 ml Dische Reagent Question 1 The postive control is tube 1 and the negative control is tube number 4. Question 2 How does the color compare between tubes 1 and 2? Why is there a difference? Question 3 Do DNA and RNA react alike? Why or why not? Hint, what does the reaction require? T able 4. Reactions for DNA Which one of the solutions is the positive control, and which one of the solutions is the negative control for the Dische reaction? The first tube is a darker shade of blue that almost looks black compared to the second tube that looks dark blue. There is a difference because there is more of a postive reaction to the first tube.

They do not react exactly alike because of their structural differences.
