Case Study: Homeostasis Case Study: Homeostasis Warren Carl Manuel BIOS251 Chamberlain University
Case Study: Homeostasis There’s a vast number of differences when it comes comparing Anatomy & Physiology, but aside from their differences, these two are complementary to each other relating each structure to their purpose or the way they function. Anatomy is the study of structure, while Physiology is the study of functions, relating to the specific Anatomical Structure. Anatomy & Physiology are both complementary to each other, every structure always has a purpose, which is why we study Physiology, to study the function of every anatomical Structure. According to the Book Anatomy & Physiology, “Together they form the bedrock of the health Sciences” (Saladin 2). While studying A&P, a person can learn a lot of things from just observing the body and the way it acts. In order to assume that a matter has life, it should have the eight different Characteristics of life which are Organization, Cellular Composition which explains that every matter is comprised of a cell or more, Metabolism which is the sum of all chemical Changes internally and Physically, Responsiveness and Movement when it comes to experiencing stimuli whether it is voluntary or involuntary, Homeostasis in where conditions are maintained in an equilibrium either negatively (reverse) or positively (amplify), Development is another characteristic in where the development and growth of a specie is characteristic of life due to the changes in the body systems internally and physically due to maturation. The last two Characteristics would be Reproduction and Evolution, A matter with life must be able to reproduce or at least have the components to reproduce to pass along the genetics to their offspring, but Evolution will shift the genetic code along the generational line to further adapt to the current environment for survival.
Case Study: Homeostasis Homeostasis is the state of equilibrium in where internal living systems are maintained steadily through physiological processes for survival. “Homeostasis is the body’s ability to detect change and activate mechanisms that oppose it” (Saladin 15). The process starts with a stimulus then receptor, and input message is sent to the control center, then the control center sends out an output message to the effector to activate a response. There are two different types of Homeostasis which is Negative feedback and Positive Feedback. “Negative feedback is a process in which the body senses a change and activates mechanisms that negate or reverse it” (Saladin 15). Negative feedback is the process in where the effectors reverse a change to maintain stability. For example, in the winter when it is cold, nerves send a message to the control center that body temperature is getting low, which sends signals to the muscles to start shivering to produce heat. While negative feedback reverses an action, positive feedback amplifies it. “Positive Feedback is a self-amplifying cycle in which a physiological change led to even greater change in the same direction” (Saladin 15). In positive feedback an action is amplified to further help maintain the systems internally. For example, when a head of a fetus is pushed against the cervix, the brain is signaled to release more oxytocin which stimulates contractions, therefore further pushing the baby out of the cervix.
