Please use the following resources: read through pages 58-61 reading Video 1 Answer the following: 1. Please define theory of evolution the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits. Changes that allow an organism to better adapt to its environment will help it survive and have more offspring. 2. Please define what natural selection Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype. It is a key mechanism of evolution, the change in the heritable traits characteristic of a population over generations. 3. What are the main points of Darwin’s ideas about natural selection? More individuals are produced each generation that can survive. Phenotypic variation exists among individuals and the variation is heritable. Those individuals with heritable traits better suited to the environment will survive. 4. Can you provide some examples of natural selection and explain how it works? In a habitat there are red bugs and green bugs. The birds prefer the taste of the red bugs, so soon there are many green bugs and few red bugs. The green bugs reproduce and make more green bugs and eventually there are no more red bugs. 5. Please define selective breeding. Selective breeding is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits by choosing which typically animal or plant males and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together. 6. What surprised you about this reading? I was surprised that all dogs were bred from wolves 7.What challenged or changed what you thought you knew? That humans will select certain animals to get the outcome they want.
