Lesson Quiz Course 5.5K views History of the Pledge of Allegiance Francis Bellamy (1855-1931) was a Baptist minister known for creating the original U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. In 1892, Bellamy was hired by The Youth's Companion, a children's magazine focused on religion. The magazine featured many prominent figures such as Emily Dickenson, Mark Twain, and Booker T. Washington. While coming up with ideas for the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival to the New World, Bellamy penned the Pledge of Allegiance. Its purpose: sell flags and magazine subscriptions. Bellamy's original version of the pledge stated: I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Bellamy was an advocate for the separation of church and state, and purposely left religion out of the pledge. At this time, the nation was still recovering from the effects of the end of the civil war, and the wording of this pledge was Bellamy's attempt to unite the nation through a mutual allegiance of patriotism. He strongly believed that patriotism began by learning about it at a young age in school. To get the pledge to be used throughout the nation, Bellamy and The Youth's Companion began selling flags with the goal of being seen in every school in the country. The motivation of patriotism and capitalism began the emergence of the Pledge of Allegiance in schools.
