1. Explain the definition of biomechanics and give two examples of early researchers in the field. Biomechanics: the study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms. Two examples of biomechanics are the hydrodynamics of swimming in fish and locomotion in general across all forms of life, from individual cells to whole organisms. 2. You read the doctor’s notes on a patient named Bill, who has been seen for shoulder pain. You want to be able to understand the notes and also be able to clearly explain the information to Bill. Translate the doctor’s notes into layman’s terms: 22 y.o. male c/o left lateral shoulder pain. Pt experiences stiffness and pain during abduction and moderate discomfort with adduction of the arm. Mild edema noted on anterior of shoulder. MRI ordered of LUE to r/o rotator cuff injury. A 22 year old male complains of his left lateral shoulder pain. Patient experiences stiffness and pain during abduction and moderate discomfort with adduction of the arm. Mild edema noted on the anterior of shoulder. Magnetic resonance imaging of the left upper extremity to rule out the rotator cuff injury. 3. Kayla was re-shoeing her horse when it became startled and kicked her in the jaw. She is experiencing pain and swelling. Her doctor is examining her jaw to see if it has been damaged. What kind of motion would the doctor ask her to perform to see if her jaw is still working properly? Explain the motion in both layman’s terms and medical terms. The doctor would touch around and ask if it hurts and how bad. He would also have her open and close her mouth. 4. Our hip joints are an example of ball and socket joints. Explain what activities the hip joints allow us to do because of being ball and socket joints. Then, explain how we would move differently if our hip joints were hinge joints instead. Ball-and-socket joints allow the greatest freedom of movement. The hips have this type of joint, in which the round end of a long bone fits into the hollow of another bone. We would move differently if our hip joints were hinge joints because hinge joints move one direction back and forth, so they don’t have full movement range unlike ball-and-socket joints. Therefore, it would be a big disadvantage and different. 5. Amber’s mother has suffered from arthritis in her knees for years. She has become unable to walk, even with the help of her cane or walker. What kind of doctor should Amber take her mother to in order to see if she can get help with the situation? Give two suggestions the doctor might have to treat Amber’s mother. Amber should take her mom to rheumatologist because rheumatologists specialized in arthritis and diseases that involve bones, muscles and joints. They are physicians in the subspecialty of internal medicine or surgery for treatment, but it depends on test and ex-rays to see the situation because everyone is different.
