Overview
Task:
Complete a field activity.
Purpose:
This activity will give you hands-on experience with one of the hazards you have
been learning about this week.
Instructions
Step 01
Complete
one of the following field activities.
Option 1
Perform an inspection, both indoors and
around the outside perimeter, of the place
where you live.
Determine whether your residence has
any kind of pest infestation problem (for
example, rodents, cockroaches, bats,
stored food pests, flies, ants, mosquitoes,
etc).
Note housekeeping and structural
features that are or are not in place to
keep pests out (for example, insufficient
storage for food, standing water,
harborage for pests).
In your initial post provide the
following information:
Where you inspected.
A list of as many potential or actual
infestation problems as you found.
Specifics of how principles of good
sanitation could be applied to eliminate
or prevent the infestations.
Option 2
Use this option only if you cannot
complete Option 1. Your field experience
in this area will be better if you can
complete Option 1.
If you cannot complete Option 1 you may
report about a time in the past when you
observed a serious pest infestation.
In your initial post provide the
following information:
Where the infestation occurred.
What situations (such as food, water,
sanitation, or harborage) may have
contributed to the problem.
What types of pests were found.
What was done to control or fix the
problem.

while inspecting my home both indoor and around, I realized that the pest infestation
problem I have are rodents, ants and cockroaches both indoor and outdoor. Rodents were
found in between holes of broken fence, gutter and farm, since they prefer areas with food
water and warm temperature. Cockroaches were found indoor and outdoor, in sewers,
under dry leaves, cracks in walls in broken toilet pipes, kitchen sink, oven and cupboards,
because they prefer dark and humid environment where the have access to water and

foods. Ants were found in gardens, undersoil, rotten woods and leaves, on trees and left
over food beverages' kitchen cupboards. Flies infestations can be everywhere, but mostly
found outdoor on rotten food and fruits and in waste bin because they prefer place that are
humid and moisten.
To eliminate rodent within my backyard, I need to seal up broken fence with cement, plaster
and clean up areas with signs of rodent activities, like garden and farm land. by disposing
of garbage regularly. using rodenticide to kill and dry them.
cockroaches, flies and ants can be eliminated by sweeping and mopping regularly. Using
steel lidden trash cans and disposing trash cans especially at night. Spraying insecticides
will also eliminate them.

Visual Inspection:
I Looked for signs of droppings, gnaw marks, or nests, which may indicate rodents.
I also Checked for shed skin, egg casings, or live insects for potential insect
infestations.
Inspect food storage areas for signs of stored food pests.
Here's the potential Infestation found in my area.
1.
Common Pest Infestations:
Rodents (rats, mice)
Insects (ants, cockroaches, termites)
Bedbugs
Flies
Mosquito
Principles of Good Sanitation:
Proper Waste Management:
Securely seal and dispose of garbage regularly to
eliminate food sources for pests.
Cleanliness:
Regularly clean and sanitize surfaces, especially in kitchens and
food storage areas.
Sealing Entry Points:
Close gaps, cracks, and openings that pests could use to
enter buildings.

Moisture Control:
Address and fix leaks promptly to prevent water
accumulation, which attracts pests.
Stored Food Handling:
Keep food in airtight containers and regularly check for
expiration dates.
Regular Inspections:
Conduct routine checks for signs of infestations and take
preventive measures.
Applying these principles consistently is crucial for effective pest control.

Cockroaches were attracted to food residues, especially in the kitchen.
Rodents seeking shelter and food sources.
Stored food pests infested stored grains, cereals, and other pantry items.
Ants were attracted to sweets and food crumbs.
Flies were breeding in organic matter, trash and food waste.

Inspection Results
I inspected both the outdoor area around the garden and indoors at the kitchen of
my residence.
Actual infestation problems
:
Outdoors: Potential issues with mosquitoes, ants, or other outdoor pests.
Indoors (kitchen): Possible concerns with stored food pests, cockroaches, or any
other kitchen-related pests.
How principles of good sanitation could be applied:
Outdoors: I Suggest eliminating standing water to control mosquito breeding, and
maintaining a well-groomed garden to reduce harborage for pests.
Indoors (kitchen): I Propose proper food storage, regular cleaning, and sealing
entry points for pests.
