You are a principal conducting an informal observation of Ms. Avery's eighth grade history classroom. It is the last 10 minutes of class and upon entering the classroom, you observe Ms. Avery seated behind her desk and the students working independently on a worksheet pertaining to the Civil War. Approximately one-third of the students are working independently, one-third are working in pairs or small groups, and one-third are not working on the assignment at all. The students not working on the assignment are using electronic devices, chatting quietly or just sitting. When Ms. Avery sees you enter the room, she stands up, tells the students that they have five more minutes to finish the class work, and proceeds to move around the classroom checking to see how far along students are on the worksheet. With five minutes left in the period, she asks students to return to their seats, which they do quickly, and she proceeds to go over the classwork in a whole group setting. Ms. Avery asks students randomly to share their answers and takes a few clarifying questions from the class. The students’ ticket out the door is to write down on a scale of 1-4 how comfortable they are with their understanding of the Civil War. What clarification questions would you ask Ms. Avery? What constructive feedback would you present to Ms. Avery? I understand that an informal evaluation or walk-through is just a snapshot of that period, so I could have missed all the really good parts of the lesson. A couple of clarification questions I would ask would be: 1. How does the worksheet pertain to her essential learning? 2. What were her expectations when it came to completing this worksheet? (What were her C.H.A.M.P.S?) 3. With the exit ticket how will you apply that information to Answer the question of what will you do with the students who don’t know the information and the what will you do with the students who do understanding the information? 4. How much time did you give students to complete the worksheet? I believe it would be hard to give true feedback with an informal evaluation especially since it is a snapshot of the lesson towards the end of the period. I feel this way because Ms. Avery could of literally just been walking around her classroom checking on students and checking for understanding. Constructive feedback I would present to Ms. Avery would be don’t be alarmed with me walking into your classroom, I don’t want to be that kind of administrator. (A good administrator should be checking in and always going in and out of classrooms to build relationships with students and teachers.) Lastly, I would suggest if she was doing an exit ticket to have the question be more specific to the content that was taught in class.
