She realizes that her own standards of beauty vary depending on her society. For women, body shape has always been the standard of beauty. In Western countries, women are expected to be thin, but in African countries, the opposite is true. What aspects or events of the story would you apply this lens to? Readers learn that the main character of the story easily changes her mind about beauty and body image, which are standards of beauty. The character leaves Canada, where she lives, and goes to the African country of Gambia for a year to teach English. The subject tried to eat more and more, but was unable to become an attractive woman in Gambian society. She realized that her fat body was not something to be ashamed of, but a beautiful thing. Select a quotation related to one of these aspects or events and explain its meaning from the “The women of the household clucked disapprovingly when they saw me.” I will be concerned about other people's “Fat is desirable. It holds beneficial meaning of abundance, fertility and health.” Because of their history “I tried desperately but I could not eat enough to please them.” This represents the conflict “What was extraordinary was that I, too, believed I was becoming beautiful.” She realized that her plump body was truly beautiful.

How has using this lens to examine the character(s ) in the story shaped your understand ing of what it means to be resilient? My experiences and emotions changed and became clearer through the characters’ conflicts. Knowing her biographical story, I knew that the consequences of these facts were the topic. I felt a social shift as I was translated into the characters' emotional conflicts, motivations, and actions. I was able to get a glimpse of the conflict that women can feel within the social structure. and I saw that she was able to resolve that conflict.
