Part One: Choose the Creative Works
1.
Describe the two creative works
. Feel free to elaborate, but make sure you include these three items:
A.
Your chosen topic (mental health, diversity, or activism) B.
The names of the chosen creative works C.
Why you chose those creative works
[ The topic I chose is diversity. The first creative work I chose is “Imagine” by John Lennon which falls under the performance category of creative works. The second work I chose is “Ladies and Gentlemen” by Andy Warhol.
"Imagine" by John Lennon carries a message of unity and inclusivity that can be related to the concept of diversity. The song envisions a world without barriers, divisions, or distinctions based on religion, nationality, or possessions. In the context of diversity, the lyrics suggest a vision of a harmonious world where people from different backgrounds coexist peacefully. The song encourages listeners to imagine a reality where differences are embraced, and people coexist with mutual respect and understanding.
I chose this work because it promotes the idea that diversity can be a source of strength rather
than division, fostering a sense of unity among people regardless of their backgrounds.
Andy Warhol's "Ladies and Gentlemen" is a series of portraits he made in the 1970s. What makes these portraits special is that they feature individuals from the transgender community. Unlike some of his more famous works, these paintings focus on the diverse and vibrant personalities of the subjects, showcasing different styles and attitudes. Warhol used bright colors and bold compositions, typical of his pop art style, to capture the essence of each person. This
series is significant for its celebration and representation of a marginalized community during a time when societal attitudes toward gender and sexuality were changing. I chose this work because it seemed to me the perfect example of diversity and also because it was such a new concept in that era.]
2.
Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic. A.
How do the different humanities subject areas (visual, literary, and performing arts) approach the topic? [ "Imagine" by John Lennon promotes themes of unity, peace, and understanding, making it a powerful tool for understanding and appreciating diversity. The song encourages celebrating differences, breaking down barriers, fostering empathy, and promoting peaceful coexistence. It can be used as an educational tool and inspiration for social change to create a more inclusive and diverse world.
Andy Warhol's "Ladies and Gentlemen" series, portraying transgender individuals, helps us understand diversity by challenging traditional gender norms, celebrating individuality, and prompting conversations about societal attitudes, the artwork contributes to a more inclusive representation of gender diversity. It serves as a historical reference and inspiration for contemporary discussions and activism around diverse identities.]
