1. QUESTIONS ON THE POWERPOINT in this week’s unit. A. Be a Linnaeus: how do you know you're looking at an epic? What are 4 of its characteristics? There are many characteristics of an epic that separates the literature from other works. First would be the length, an epic is much longer than most of the other forms of literature. Second way to identify an epic is when the literature begins in the middle of the story, also known as “Media Res”. Another way to know that you are reading an epic is when you see long lists in them known as “ Epic Catalogues”. Last but not least Epics are always centered on a hero that embodies values of civilization whether they have good or bad qualities. Those are some of the many characteristics of an epic. B. Identify 2 poets and/or poems that were clearly influenced by Homer. Do NOT choose works attributed to Homer himself. Homer influenced many poet’s to use his form of literature For example, Lord Bryon's "Don Juan" poem and "The Divine Comedy," by Dante. Both of these works begin in media res mimicking the form of literature used by Homer. 2. Questions on the video, "Crash Course on The Odyssey ” in this week’s unit. See the link on this week’s Bb unit for the video or just click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS4jk5kavy4 . Quote, but no need to cite for support. A. According to the Crash Course on Homer, was The Odyssey originally written or spoken? The Odyssey is said to be spoken using Homeric epithets to target a listening audience and help them visualize the character in the epic poem. B. Did the events in The Odyssey occur during Homer's life or did they take place before Homer was born? The events in The Odyssey took place before Homer was born. 3. Questions on Books 1 and V of The Odyssey . Cite the poet, Homer,
and either line or page number in parentheses when quoting or paraphrasing for support. Example: (Homer 27) or (Homer 8). A. Epics very often are about the literal and figurative journey . What journey must Odysseus’ son Telemachus go on after speaking to Athena, who is in disguise as Mentes? How does his having to make a journey make him a parallel character with his father? Quote, cite, and explain for support. Athena is disguised as Mentes in order to look like a visitor and send Telemachus on a journey to find his father. “Choose your best ship, man her with twenty oars, and set out to discover why your father is gone so long” (Homer 28). Athena gave telemachus the confidence he needed and assured him that he is no longer a child But she left Telemachus full of spirit and daring, and concerned for his father even more than he had been before. He felt the change and was overcome with awe, for he realized that a god had been with him.” (Homer 33). This makes Telemachus parallel to his father by building his courage; he's able to make a reputation for himself and show the same bravery as his father while he goes on this journey. B. What is Odysseus’ main journey? That is, where is he trying to go, ultimately? Quote, cite, and explain for support. Odysseus’ main journey is to leave the cave where Calypso was holding him captive and make it back home to Ithaca to see his wife penelope. Odysseus is so determined that he’s willing to go full measures to reunite with his wife again even after calypso warned him of the disasters to come before he reaches his motherland. Odysseus responds “I long to reach my home and see the happy day of my return. It is my never-falling wish and what if the powers above do wreck me out on the wine-dark sea? I have a heart that is mured to suffering and I shall steel it to endure that too” ( Homer 93). This shows the eagerness Odysseus has to make it back home to his family, denying the request of Calypso. “But you would stay and share this home with me, and take on immortality, however much you long to see that wife of yours” (Homer 93). This quote makes it clear that Calypso knew that Odysseus was longing to get back home to his wife. 4. AN EPIC MATCH 1.E
