Little Jamaica Article Questions
1. In paragraph 2, what do you think "palanced" means?
I think palanced means to be happy or joyful about something (the article states “The disturbed
look of owners from behind the smoggy storefront windows don’t reflect the vibrant faces that
once palanced down the road for Kiddie Carnival years ago).
2. Why is the author so negative about seeing saw dust, heavy machinery, and loud
construction trucks in "Little Jamaica?"
Because it signals negative change in Little Jamaica, because it signals that urbanization and
industrialization is coming for them. The look and feel of these once kind and homely Jamaican
neighborhoods will change, and become modern and new. Little Jamaica’s, once a cultural hub
of vibrance, is being silenced by the louder noises of construction all around them.
3. List three similarities between "Little Jamaica" and Africville.
1)
Neglected areas with less oppourtunities
2)
Mainly Black Canadians live in these communities
3)
Lots of cultural value in these areas and very homely
4)
Are being urbanized and industrialized without their permission (both groups didn’t want
this)
4. Why was it so important to recognize "Little Jamaica" as a heritage and economic
innovation hub?
They were able to create a sustainable community and society in Toronto while also being able to
embrace their culture and heritage. They were also able to grow businesses, provide job
opportunities and grow their economy through their own efforts. This is why it’s important to
recognize what they have achieved instead of neglecting them since they have done nothing but
add to Toronto.
5. When did the first Jamaican immigrants come to Canada? Why might this date be
significant to Jamaican-Canadians?
In 1796, Jamaicans began settling down roots in Canada, with 600 Jamaican Maroons were
deported from Jamaica to Nova Scotia. This date is significant because it marks the beginning of
a cultural revolution in Canada, the first time they’ve seen different cultures and traditions make
their way into the mainstream. It’s important to acknowledge those who came before, because
they’ve paved the way for their descendants.
6. Randy’s Patties was a staple and iconic food place in Little Jamaica but closed in 2022
due to years of endless Metrolinx construction, two years of Covid, labor shortages, and
aging owners. Even Drake tried to save Randy’s Patties. How could this closure have
been prevented?
The government could have provided more financial aid for businesses in Little Jamaica to help
preserve their culture. Since it was also mentioned that other businesses like Monica’s Cosmetic
Supplies and Wisdom’s Barber Shop in Little Jamaica owned their buildings, and this made it a
bit easier for them to preserve their culture in the neighborhood.
7. Why do you think "Little Jamaica" was neglected for so long and not deemed a
heritage site?
Because they were people of color and the government didn’t wish to give them recognition and
attention, because for so long Black Canadians were deemed as inferior.
