Task 2: Ensuring Your Classroom is a Safe and Supportive Place for All Students
A: Maria is a thirteen-year-old biracial middle school girl who hails from a multi-cultural home
with a stressed Hispanic mother and an African-American father who has begun bickering. She
was forced to relocate during the school year from her huge life to a tiny town populated
primarily by middle-class whites. Due to her ethnic background and upbringing, Maria dresses
differently from the other students at school. Not only at school but also online, where some of
her new classmates have formed a website called "I Hate Maria," she is mocked and abused.
Maria is having difficulties remaining focused on her academics because of all that is going on at
school, and she is contemplating suicide.
B: 1) As a teacher, I'd make sure to tell Maria how important she is and that I'd be there for her if
she needed anything to establish a trusting connection. I would establish structure and
consistency so that she was aware of the class's expectations. Maria is being bullied both in-
person and online, which is one of her problems. I'd make sure Maria understands that she can
come to me if she is being bullied. I'd also request the assistance of the school counselor in
speaking with the pupils who are bullying Maria. We will inform them that their actions are
illegal and will not be permitted.
1b) By establishing a trusting connection with her, she will feel at ease speaking with me,
allowing me as a teacher to learn about her interests and skills. Knowing and using her hobbies
and abilities would empower her and increase her self-confidence, boosting her self-esteem. For
example, we will be changing classrooms in fifteen minutes, so make sure you are working hard
to complete your present activity. Throughout the class, I will check in with several students,
including Maria, to ensure that they are paying attention and to pull them back into the lesson if
they have wandered away. Remind students of any assignments or special activities that will take
place the next day after class.
2) I would utilize Maria's school-issued agenda to send out details on planned events or special
activities for that week to include Maria's family. I would advise her parents to connect with her
daily, urging them to ask her about her day and what is going on at school. Please treat any issues
seriously if they emerge. I'd make sure they have a list of resources accessible via the school,
including the school counselor, in case they needed it.
C: I am an African American young woman who has raised by both her parents in the same
home. I grew up moving from state to state up and down the East Coast. When we finally settled
in Virginia my family and I were always moving from county to county. Even though my family
and I have been through a lot I had two supportive parents who tried their best to give me a
stable home and the best education possible. I was bullied throughout school and made to feel
like an outsider looking in. I never really fit in during school and even in adulthood I still feel
like an outsider.
1c) My cultural background does have a big effect on how I deal with Maria and her situation. I
would come from a place of understanding. Empathy is a big part of teaching, at least it is to me.
First, I would be able to come to help Maria from my own experiences in life. Secondly, I would
be able to talk to Maria because I have suffered from depression because of my experiences in
school.
