CBPR Skill-Building Activity – Part 1: Walking Tour Ca Zing MPH509: Community-Based Participatory Research Chamberlain University Dr. Rose September 23, 2023
A place that is familiar and meaningful to me is my church, Chin Evangelical Baptist Church (CEBC). The church is located in the heart of the community and consists of welcoming buildings occupying a large amount of land. Two buildings are joined together. The smaller one is used for Sunday school and small events, while the larger one is use for Sunday worship and community gatherings. The church buildings have a simple design; it has a muted neutral exterior with a cross prominently displayed on the highest point of the smaller building. The church has 3 main entrance, which makes it easier to access. Inside the church, the church features a podium for the pastor, projectors for the worship team, modest religious decorations, and many more. The buildings feature many office rooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, and classrooms for children's ministry. The church is easily accessible by foot or by car for residents. It’s situated off the main road, and there are many parking spaces available. CEBC plays a central role in my life. It holds significance for me as a place of spiritual worship and where I can connect with God. Additionally, it is a place where I can connect with my brothers and sisters in Christ. In addition, CEBC plays a central role in my community. It hosts many conferences such as Bible conferences, youth conferences, and America Chin Churches conferences. CEBC is also a place where our community holds cultural events such as Chin National Day, weddings, funerals, and community outreach programs. It is a hub for the Chin community to connect with their cultural and spiritual roots while also integrating into the larger community. The church is important to me and my community because it serves as a place where different Chin ethnic groups can unite in one place, and maintain our cultural and religious traditions. The church’s strength lies in its role as a cultural and spiritual anchor for the Chin community. It provides a space for cultural celebrations, and remembering our roots. Moreover,
it is a place for worship and spiritual growth, providing guidance, and support to its members. It is a safe space for individuals to find emotional support during difficult times. The church is also focusing on youth programs to provide moral and ethical guidance for their future. Chin Evangelical Baptist Church is known as the first Chin church in America. In order to better serve the community, I am confident that conducting CBPR work in CEBC to identify the needs of the community would be a valuable initiative. I could collaborate with church leaders and young people to develop research questions and methodologies for interpreting results. A Community-Based Participatory Research project at CEBC has the potential to increase community engagement. Community members can now have a say in determining research, decision-making, and advocating for change. CBPR often leads to more relevant research as community members offer valuable insights and cultural sensitivity that researchers may lack. This leads to high-quality data and more effective interventions.
