Madison Jones March 5, 2023 HUM-100 Perspectives in the Humanities Short Answer: Cultural Objects and Their Culture List three cultures or subcultures you identify strongly with 1. New England Culture 2. First Responder Culture 3. Catholicism Identify one representative object from the humanities for each of the cultures or subcultures you identify with and explain how the cultural object reflects the culture in which it exists. American Culture: The American Flag National flags are cultural artifact that represents the nation through imagery, color, and symbolism. When dissecting the American flag, we recognize the 50 stars representing each state and the 13 stripes representing the original colonies; furthermore, the colors on the flag have become synonymous with the representation of freedom. American culture was founded on the ideals of freedom and individualism. Unlike other cultures, Americans uniquely embody a combination of ethnicities, races, traditions, and religions. The American flag is a symbolic representation of cultural freedom and an individualistic mindset. The American flag's imagery reflects American history and present-day cultural values.
New England Culture: Maple Syrup Although food may not be a traditional cultural artifact, it can represent the values, history, and customs of the region from which it is derived. New England is known for its maple syrup production, and the product is symbolic of the New England lifestyle. The custom of taping maple trees to produce maple syrup is a tradition specific to the region and was first done by the area's indigenous people. Living off the land is also a long-held ideal of New England culture and is embodied through traditions such as maple syrup production. People who live in this culture have such a connection to the product that a maple festival is held annually around the region. The production of maple syrup holds significant value for the region of New England by representing its traditions and historical way of life. Catholicism: The Last Supper - Mural Art, specifically in religion, is a way of communicating a story between those who may speak different languages. The Last Supper mural by Leonardo De Vinci is an excellent example of how the story of Catholicism was expressed through art. This famous piece of artwork represents a significant story told throughout Catholic history. Although the art is centuries old, it is still considered an iconic part of Catholic culture. For instance, as a young child attending church with my family, I vividly remember this art piece being one of the first religious works I saw. Artwork is a significant part of Catholic culture because it tells a story anyone can understand regardless of race, ethnicity, or era of living.
