Provide a link to the news story and write a short summary of each side’s position. How do
you think the controversy was impacted by each party’s interpretation of this cultural
work?
The article “Controversial ‘McJesus’ art sculpture defended by Israel” by Caleb Parke of
Fox News discusses the controversy over a sculpture on display at the Haifa Museum in Israel.
The “McJesus” sculptor depicts Ronald McDonald on a crucifix imitating the famous crucifixion
of Jesus. Many Christians took extreme offense at the sculptor, claiming it made a mockery of
the sacrifices of Jesus by using the imagery of the crucifix. Some went so far as to claim the
sculptor could not be protected under free speech and protested the sculptor be taken down. On
the other hand, the artist claimed he had no intentions of creating religious controversy, and the
imagery of the crucifix was only used to poetry the message of consumerism culture. Many
organizations, such as Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI), stood with the artist and
advocated for the museum to keep the work on display. The ACRI made bold statements
objecting to the government intervening in the sculptor’s removal stating the work is an act of
creative expression protected by free speech. This controversy is a prime example of the fine line
between religious imitation and ridicule.
